Effect of the in situ leaching solution of ion-absorbed rare earth on the mechanical behavior of basement rock

Wen Zhong et al.

Summary: Laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the deterioration behavior and failure mechanism of rock under the erosion of leaching solution. The results showed that the erosion of the solution led to a decrease in rock strength, mass, and P-wave velocity, and an increase in porosity. The soaking time also affected the failure pattern of the rock specimens.

Experimental Study of Dynamic Characteristics of Tailings With Different Reconsolidation Degrees After Liquefaction

Wensong Wang et al.

Summary: The construction period of most tailing ponds is usually over ten years and may be affected by earthquakes and mining activities. The reconsolidation process of tailings after liquefaction, caused by earthquakes or vibrations, is prolonged. Changes in the nature of tailings due to previous earthquakes will affect the performance of tailing dams in subsequent earthquakes. The research results are of great significance for the safe disposal of tailings, especially those in earthquake-prone areas.

3D Visualization Monitoring and Early Warning System of a Tailings Dam-Gold Copper Mine Tailings Dam in Zijinshan, Fujian, China

Wen Nie et al.

Summary: This article introduces a 3D tailings dam visualization early warning system based on GIS, ARIMA, and 3S technology. The system can predict the deformation of the tailings dam and changes in the phreatic line. It allows for data management, visualization, and disaster prediction and early warning for key monitoring points such as rainfall, infiltration line, and tailings dam deformation. The system is highly practical and provides intuitive results.

Interpretation of the Failure of the Aznalcollar (Spain) Tailings Dam

Joaquin Marti et al.

Summary: The study investigated the mechanisms and causes of the sudden failure of the Aznalcollar tailings pond, which was mainly attributed to the brittle response of clay and incomplete consolidation of the dam's foundation. Modeling difficulties included incorporating the strain softening behavior of the clays. The results emphasized the importance of accurately representing the brittle response of the clay in predicting the geometric shape of the failure surface.

An Overview of Conventional Tailings Dam Geotechnical Failure Mechanisms

Luke Clarkson et al.

Summary: This paper provides an overview of conventional tailings dam failure mechanisms by leveraging global knowledge and data interpretation. It aims to facilitate transparent access to tailings dam background and understanding, focusing on core geotechnical failure mechanisms and how they lead to instability and failure of tailings dam structures. The research also delves into factors contributing to failure, how failure progresses, and methods for anticipating, monitoring, and designing to mitigate risk.

Propagation Laws of Reclamation Risk in Tailings Ponds Using Complex Network Theory

Zhixin Zhen et al.

Summary: Accidents in tailings ponds have posed a constraint on the sustainable development of the mining industry, and improper reclamation methods could lead to increased environmental pollution. A three-dimensional framework for identifying accident hazards was proposed, and an evolution network of reclamation risk in tailings ponds was constructed, showing small world and scale-free characteristics. Prioritizing core hazards can significantly reduce the reclamation risk of the tailings pond.

Laboratory experimental study of the evaporation and mechanical behaviour of deposited tailings

Binbin Zheng et al.

Summary: Surface deposition is widely used in the mining industry to manage mill tailings. The evaporation processes of deposited tailings were studied, with results showing four stages in the evaporation process for coarse and fine tailings. Factors such as exposure area and layer thickness have a considerable influence on evaporation rates.
