The relationship between oral cancer and cadmium: a review

Samed Satir

Summary: Cadmium has been classified as a type I carcinogen and is closely related to oral cancer, with higher concentrations found in oral cancer patients who use tobacco. Future research should focus on methodological improvements and new cell line studies to further understand the relationship between cadmium and autophagy-apoptosis.

The population genetics of pathogenicEscherichia coli

Erick Denamur et al.

Summary: Escherichia coli, a commensal of the vertebrate gut and an opportunistic pathogen, has evolved virulence mainly through acquiring virulence genes on mobile elements in a specific chromosomal background. The emergence of stable and cosmopolitan lineages of pathogenic E. coli reflects an optimization of strain fitness through interactions between virulence determinants and the rest of the genome, with few lineages responsible for pathologies compared to the diversity of commensal strains.

Acceleration of emergence of E. coli antibiotic resistance in a simulated sublethal concentration of copper and tetracycline co-contaminated environment

Jinmei Li et al.

Summary: The study found that a co-contaminated environment with metals and antibiotics could significantly increase bacteria's resistance to antibiotics, especially at high sublethal concentrations. Whole-genome characterization results indicated variability in genotype and phenotype involved in antibiotic resistance. Evolved resistant strains displayed hereditary resistance even after multiple culture cycles.

JMM Profile: Carbapenems: a broad-spectrum antibiotic

Tom Armstrong et al.

Summary: Carbapenems are powerful antibiotics that inhibit bacterial cell-wall biosynthesis and are highly effective against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive drug-resistant infections. However, side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and seizures can occur in some recipients. Clinical resistance is primarily driven by enzymatic hydrolysis of the beta-lactam ring, classified into Class A, B, and D enzymes.

Co-selection of antibiotic resistance genes, and mobile genetic elements in the presence of heavy metals in poultry farm environments

Sohaib H. Mazhar et al.

Summary: Environmental selection of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in livestock is primarily influenced by metal residues, with metals having a greater impact on ARG profile compared to antibiotics. Bacterial composition and horizontal gene transfer are key factors shaping the composition of ARGs.

Toxic Mechanisms of Five Heavy Metals: Mercury, Lead, Chromium, Cadmium, and Arsenic

Mahdi Balali-Mood et al.

Summary: Industrial activities of the last century have led to increased human exposure to heavy metals such as mercury, lead, chromium, cadmium, and arsenic, resulting in acute or chronic poisonings through water, air, and food. These heavy metals accumulate in the body, causing toxic effects on various tissues and organs by disrupting cellular events and inducing oxidative stress. Common mechanisms of action of these metals include ROS generation, inhibition of antioxidant defense, enzyme inactivation, and selective binding to specific macromolecules, some leading to genomic instability and carcinogenicity through DNA damage and oxidative stress. Despite current knowledge, heavy metal poisoning incidents remain prevalent, necessitating preventive measures and effective treatment, possibly including chelation therapy.
