A review of the presence of formaldehyde in fish and seafood

B. K. K. K. Jinadasa et al.

Summary: Fish is a great source of high-quality protein, good fat, vitamins, and minerals, and can lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke. However, the illegal addition of formaldehyde to extend shelf life is a common problem, and it is classified as a human carcinogen. There is also a natural formation pathway of formaldehyde in fish and seafood. Current studies show that the reported levels of formaldehyde in fish are often higher than the recognized safety level, highlighting the need for efforts to measure indigenous formaldehyde levels and strengthen regulations to prevent illegal addition of formaldehyde.

Occupational scenarios and exposure assessment to formaldehyde: A systematic review

Vittoria Cammalleri et al.

Summary: The systematic review identified various work sectors at risk for exposure to formaldehyde, investigated assessment procedures for occupational exposure, and evaluated reported exposure levels across different settings. The review included 43 papers that highlighted the presence of formaldehyde in occupational scenarios, with exposure levels ranging from undetectable to potentially harmful concentrations. Findings indicated that formaldehyde exposure was commonly found at levels exceeding outdoor concentrations, emphasizing the need for targeted strategies to eliminate or mitigate exposure in high-risk occupational settings.

Enzyme decorated dendritic bimetallic nanocomposite biosensor for detection of HCHO

Rajendra Kumar Reddy Gajjala et al.

Summary: Recent studies have focused on bi- and tri-metallic nanocomposites to enhance catalytic surface and detection sensitivity. A biosensor based on formaldehyde dehydrogenase decorated Cys-AuPd-ErGO nanocomposite was successfully developed for NADH and HCHO detection, showing direct electron transfer and high sensitivity. The sensor demonstrated excellent performance in detecting HCHO in adulterated samples of fish and milk, with recoveries of 88-104%, and was validated against HPLC method with a correlation coefficient of 0.99.

Risk-Benefit Assessment of Feed Additives in the One Health Perspective

Alberto Mantovani et al.

Summary: The safety and sustainability of animal feeds play a crucial role in ensuring the overall safety of the food chain. Feed additive assessment involves considering consumer safety, animal health and welfare, as well as the safety of the environment. This assessment process takes a One Health perspective, considering the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. By examining three case studies, it is evident that risk-benefit assessment (RBA) is an important approach in evaluating the use of feed additives, particularly in balancing the benefits and risks for different species. A robust assessment of animal requirements and sustainability considerations are key factors in promoting the safe and effective use of feed additives.

Migration of formaldehyde from 'biobased' bamboo/melamine cups: A Dutch retail survey

K. Bouma et al.

Summary: Bamboo/melamine cups, marketed as ecofriendly and sustainable, may release formaldehyde and melamine into beverages. A study by the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority found that some cups had high formaldehyde migration levels, posing health risks. Babies and young children are particularly vulnerable due to their lower body weight. As a result, some EU member states have banned these products from the market.

Automated method for short-chain aldehydes emission measurement by dynamic solid-phase microextraction on-fiber derivatization GC-MSD coupled with a flow-cell

Jian Zou et al.

Summary: A novel automated method was developed for testing short-chain aldehyde emissions using a chamber and a flow-cell coupled with dynamic solid-phase microextraction (SPME) on-fiber derivatization technique. This method provides comparable or even better repeatability and sensitivity compared to traditional techniques, and allows for studying short-chain aldehyde emissions from multiple samples in one experiment.

Summary: Two luminescent porous networks (CMERI-1 & CMERI-2) have been developed for efficient detection of formaldehyde (FA) in aqueous medium, with CMERI-1 showing better sensitivity and quicker response time due to facile imine formation. The detection limits of CMERI-1 & CMERI-2 for FA in water are below the intracellular concentration of formaldehyde, and a MOF-based hydrogel membrane for vapor-phase FA detection has been fabricated. The response mechanisms of MOFs are supported by density functional theory (DFT) and Fukui indices analysis, indicating their potential in real-world applications for food sample and water analyses.
