Factors that contribute to persistent Listeria in food processing facilities and relevant interventions: A rapid review

Alexandra Belias et al.

Summary: This review identified the locations, risk factors, and interventions for persistent Listeria in food processing facilities, with a focus on the need for additional research in produce operations. The study also highlighted the variability in the definition of persistence among studies and emphasized the importance of standardizing this definition.

Incidence and genetic variability of Listeria monocytogenes isolated from vegetables in Poland

Elzbieta Mackiw et al.

Summary: The study found that the prevalence of Listeria monocytogenes in vegetable products available in Poland was generally low, with most isolates being susceptible to antimicrobial agents and harboring virulence-associated genes. Different serogroups, restriction profiles, and clonal complexes revealed the diversity of L. monocytogenes isolates in the samples collected over the years.

Unraveling the emergence and population diversity of Listeria monocytogenes in a newly built meat facility through whole genome sequencing

Adrian Alvarez-Molina et al.

Summary: The study conducted sampling and analysis of the food processing environment of a newly opened meat processing facility, identifying an increase in Listeria monocytogenes isolation frequency and sequence type diversity over time. Persistent strains were observed in the environment, suggesting clonal expansion and persistence of certain strains with attenuated virulence potential and plasmid presence. The analysis also showed that ST9 strains isolated were more closely related to European isolates than North American isolates and more frequently linked to meat and pork products in Europe.

Listeriosis Cases and Genetic Diversity of Their L. monocytogenes Isolates in China, 2008-2019

Binghuai Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the demographic and clinical features, outcomes, antibiotic susceptibility profiles, and molecular characteristics of L. monocytogenes causing listeriosis in China from 2008 to 2019. It identified a high genotypic diversity of L. monocytogenes strains and highlighted a high prevalence of ST87 and ST1 in listeriosis cases in China.

Identification of Listeria monocytogenes Contamination in a Ready-to-Eat Meat Processing Plant in China

Hongzhi Zhang et al.

Summary: Listeria monocytogenes was found in a ready-to-eat meat processing plant in Shanghai, with the majority of isolates originating from processing facilities, notably the ST5 (1/2b) strain. The study revealed the pathogen's ability to form biofilms, aiding its persistence in the environment. While standard sanitation procedures were effective, they were insufficient in completely removing L. monocytogenes, especially its biofilms.

Phylogenetic Analysis and Genome-Wide Association Study Applied to an Italian Listeria monocytogenes Outbreak

Alexandra Chiaverini et al.

Summary: The study investigated a severe outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes ST7 strain in Central Italy, linked to a meat food-producing plant contaminated by the outbreak strain, which reemerged in the same region causing another listeriosis case. The epidemic and reemergent strains were genetically closer to a ST7 clone with different PFGE profiles, and were associated with the pork production chain. The persistence and reemergence of the outbreak were likely due to both the presence of truly persistent clones and the repeated introduction of new ones, along with the contribution of prophage genes promoting their survival. Despite no significant genomic differences between the outbreak and reemergent strains, transcriptional factor and phage genes associated with the phage LP-114 helped differentiate the related clones detected during the outbreak.

Distribution, contamination routes, and seasonal influence of persistent Listeria monocytogenes in a commercial fresh Hypsizigus marmoreus production facility

Qifan Sun et al.

Summary: Listeria monocytogenes was found to be present in 27.0% of samples collected in a mushroom plant, with specific strains persisting throughout different stages of production. The study suggests that critical disinfection measures are necessary to eliminate the persistence of L. monocytogenes in the facility.

Prevalence of Listeria Species and Listeria monocytogenes on Raw Produce Arriving at Frozen Food Manufacturing Facilities

Brittany F. Magdovitz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and numbers of Listeria species and L. monocytogenes on raw produce arriving at frozen food facilities. Results showed variations in the prevalence of Listeria species among different commodities, with higher prevalence of L. monocytogenes in corn, peas, and green beans. Such data can be valuable for frozen vegetable processors in implementing process control standards.
