Species identification of ruminant milk by genotyping of the κ-casein gene

R. R. Vafin et al.

Summary: The development of molecular genetic and bioinformatic systems for identifying the species of milk and dairy products is important for controlling turnover of falsified products. The study aims to develop a method using PCR-RFLP analysis to identify species from agricultural ruminant animals. The method includes sample preparation, nucleic acid extraction, PCR-RFLP technique, gel electrophoresis, and result analysis using software and algorithms.

DNA barcode markers applied to seafood authentication: an updated review

Telmo J. R. Fernandes et al.

Summary: This review presents the current status of DNA barcodes in seafood species authentication, covering barcode regions, reference databases, related methodologies, and various applications. COI gene is the preferred target in animal species identification, and Sanger sequencing-based DNA barcoding is the most widely used approach in seafood authentication. However, significant advances have been made in recent years towards DNA barcoding strategies, including the use of next generation sequencing.

Droplet Digital PCR (ddPCR) Analysis for the Detection and Quantification of Cow DNA in Buffalo Mozzarella Cheese

Anna Cutarelli et al.

Summary: Buffalo mozzarella cheese is a Protected Designation of Origin product made exclusively from buffalo milk. Some producers have started to adulterate the cheese with milk from different species to maximize their profits, leading to fraud. To combat this, a molecular assay-droplet digital Polymerase Chain Reaction technique (ddPCR) has been developed to detect the presence of cow milk in buffalo mozzarella cheese labelled as PDO products.
