Simulating Collider Physics on Quantum Computers Using Effective Field Theories

Christian W. Bauer et al.

Summary: Simulating the full dynamics of a quantum field theory over a wide range of energies demands large quantum computing resources, but perturbative techniques can accurately model many observables in particle physics. Effective field theories provide an efficient mechanism for separating high energy dynamics calculated by traditional perturbation theory from low energy dynamics, and quantum algorithms can be utilized to simulate the dynamics of low energy EFT from first principles. Calculations of vacuum transitions in scalar field theory were performed using simulations of a quantum computer and measurements on the IBMQ Manhattan machine.

Practical verification protocols for analog quantum simulators

Ryan Shaffer et al.

Summary: Analog quantum simulation is expected to be a significant application of near-term quantum devices, and verifying these devices without relying on known simulation results is important as system sizes grow. Experimentally-driven verification protocols for analog quantum simulators are discussed for their sensitivity to error sources and scalability to larger system sizes. These protocols were demonstrated experimentally using a two-qubit trapped-ion analog quantum simulator and numerically using models of up to five qubits.

Light-Front Field Theory on Current Quantum Computers

Michael Kreshchuk et al.

Summary: A quantum algorithm is presented for simulating quantum field theory in the light-front formulation, utilizing existing quantum devices to study the structure of bound states in relativistic nuclear physics. The algorithm applies the Variational Quantum Eigensolver to find ground states of the light-front Hamiltonian obtained within the Basis Light-Front Quantization framework. This research demonstrates the feasibility of using the light-front approach to quantum field theory for simulating real physical systems on a quantum computer, with calculations performed on the IBM Vigo chip.

Efficient Stabilized Two-Qubit Gates on a Trapped-Ion Quantum Computer

Reinhold Blumel et al.

Summary: To scale up quantum processors and achieve quantum advantage, a new gate-optimizing principle has been introduced to trade off negligible amounts of gate fidelity for substantial savings in power, leading to significant increases in gate speed and/or qubit connectivity. This method has been experimentally verified on a trapped-ion quantum computer and provides increased robustness to mode drift.

Observation of a prethermal discrete time crystal

A. Kyprianidis et al.

Summary: Extending statistical physics to nonequilibrium settings has led to the discovery of new phases of matter catalyzed by periodic driving. This study showcases the utilization of a trapped-ion quantum simulator to observe a prethermal discrete time crystal without disorder, circumventing the heating problem using high-frequency driving. Floquet prethermalization is proposed as a general strategy for creating, stabilizing, and studying intrinsically out-of-equilibrium phases of matter.

Toward simulating quantum field theories with controlled phonon-ion dynamics: A hybrid analog-digital approach

Zohreh Davoudi et al.

Summary: Quantum field theories are essential in modern physics, and simulating them in real-time remains challenging in classical computing. Trapped-ion systems offer a promising platform for quantum simulations, with hybrid analog-digital proposals showing potential for efficient and flexible simulations. By combining digital and analog schemes, complex dynamics of quantum field theories can be simulated effectively.

Search for efficient formulations for Hamiltonian simulation of non-Abelian lattice gauge theories

Zohreh Davoudi et al.

Summary: The paper investigates the Hamiltonian formulation for non-Abelian lattice gauge theories, analyzing different formulations in terms of their dependence on the dimension of physical Hilbert space and the impact on spectrum and dynamics. The study reveals clear advantages in simulating within the loop-string-hadron framework, which significantly reduces costs and enables more efficient and reliable quantum simulations. Future research will focus on analyzing resource requirements for quantum simulations of non-Abelian LGT to identify the most efficient Hamiltonian formulation relevant to nature.

Single-particle digitization strategy for quantum computation of a φ4 scalar field theory

Joao Barata et al.

Summary: Motivated by the parton picture of high-energy quantum chromodynamics, the study develops a single-particle digitization strategy for efficient quantum simulation of relativistic scattering processes. Quantum algorithms for initial state preparation, time evolution, and final state measurements are worked out, along with a nonperturbative renormalization strategy within this single-particle framework.
