Impact of the Agulhas Return Current on the oceanography of the Kerguelen Plateau region, Southern Ocean, over the last 40 kyrs

M. Civel-Mazens et al.

Summary: The oceanography of the western Indian sector of the Southern Ocean is complex due to the presence of subantarctic islands and plateaus. New sea-surface and sub-surface temperature data from cores covering the last 40,000 years reveal past oceanographic changes in the Kerguelen Islands region. The study suggests that surface conditions in the Subantarctic Zone of the Kerguelen Islands are influenced by the migration of Southern Ocean hydrological fronts and the Agulhas (Return) Current.

Physical and Biogeochemical Regionalization of the Southern Ocean and the CCAMLR Zone 48.1

Giovanni Testa et al.

Summary: The Southern Ocean and the 48.1 CCAMLR zone were analyzed to investigate the correlation between physical and biogeochemical variability. Bathymetry and sea ice coverage were identified as major factors explaining the biogeochemical variability in the region, with physical variables explaining a significant portion of the variance.

Antarctic Polar Front migrations in the Kerguelen Plateau region, Southern Ocean, over the past 360 kyrs

M. Civel-Mazens et al.

Summary: In the Southern Ocean, climate-driven latitudinal migrations of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current frontal system impact ocean circulation and primary productivity. The Antarctic Polar Front's migrations influence nutrient redistribution, biodiversity, and the soft tissue carbon pump in the modern Southern Ocean.

The Southern Ocean Radiolarian (SO-RAD) dataset: a new compilation of modern radiolarian census data

Kelly-Anne Lawler et al.

Summary: Radiolarians preserved in marine sediments are used as proxies for reconstructing past Southern Ocean environments. The Southern Ocean Radiolarian (SO-RAD) dataset, comprising census counts for 238 radiolarian taxa from surface sediment samples, is the largest dataset of its kind and can be used for paleoceanographic reconstructions and modern biogeography studies. Recommendations and guidelines for cleaning and subsetting the data are included for users unfamiliar with radiolarian procedures.
