Large dataset of octocoral mitochondrial genomes provides new insights into mt-mutS evolution and function

Viraj Muthye et al.

Summary: Through studying the mt-genomes of octocorals, it was found that they contain the mtMutS gene involved in DNA repair. This gene is unique to the organellar genome of octocorals. The presence of mt-mutS in some octocoral lineages leads to accelerated mt-sequence evolution.

Application of phylogenomic tools to unravel anthozoan evolution

Z. B. Randolph Quek et al.

Summary: Anthozoa, consisting of approximately 7500 living species of corals and sea anemones, is one of the most ecologically and economically valuable marine taxa. However, taxonomy and systematics of anthozoans remain uncertain due to factors like cryptic speciation and morphological plasticity. Advances in molecular sequencing have provided vast genomic data on anthozoans, but reduced-representation techniques are still favored due to the high cost associated with whole genome assemblies. Further studies are needed to enhance the phylogenetic understanding of Anthozoa and to generate more precise divergence time estimates.

Recent speciation and hybridization in Icelandic deep-sea isopods: An integrative approach using genomics and proteomics

Eva Paulus et al.

Summary: The study revealed genetic diversity in the marine isopod species Haploniscus bicuspis, with multiple lineages identified in the circum-Icelandic region. The northern lineages display a complex phylogeographic history, while the southern populations may represent two distinct species. Minimal differences in proteomic profiles suggest ongoing or recent speciation processes.

Correct Species Identification and Its Implications for Conservation Using Haploniscidae (Crustacea, Isopoda) in Icelandic Waters as a Proxy

Karlotta Kuerzel et al.

Summary: Accurate identification of deep-sea species is challenging due to insufficient and inadequate identification keys. This study tested various techniques, including morphological and molecular approaches, for the identification of deep-sea isopods. Interactive identification keys based on the DELTA format were found to be reliable in identifying species within the Haploniscidae family, and even enabled the identification of a new species. However, these keys have limitations when dealing with species with ontogenetic or sexual dimorphism.

Rapid species level identification of fish eggs by proteome fingerprinting using MALDI-TOF MS

Sven Rossel et al.

Summary: The accurate identification of fish eggs is crucial for monitoring fish stocks and preventing overfishing. Using MALDI-TOF MS as a rapid and cost-effective tool, researchers were able to successfully identify fish eggs at the species level with a high success rate. This technology offers a promising solution for efficient species identification in fisheries management.

Proteomic fingerprinting facilitates biodiversity assessments in understudied ecosystems: A case study on integrated taxonomy of deep sea copepods

Jasmin Renz et al.

Summary: Accurate and reliable estimates of marine zooplankton biodiversity are essential for understanding ecosystem dynamics, but deep-sea species identification faces challenges due to new species and lack of taxonomic experts. Using morphological, genetic, and proteomic characteristics, the study showed that proteomic fingerprinting can accelerate biodiversity estimates, providing a potential tool for assessing species diversity.

Evaluating Different Storage Media for Identification of Taenia saginata Proglottids Using MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry

Tabea P. Wendel et al.

Summary: Taenia saginata, a helminth causing taeniasis in humans and cysticercosis in cattle, requires a species-specific diagnosis for effective management. Traditional diagnostic methods lack sensitivity and the ability to differentiate it from similar species. MALDI-TOF MS shows promise as an accurate technique for identification of T. saginata through protein spectra.
