Emerging harmful algal bloom species over the last four decades in China

Haifeng Gu et al.

Summary: The first recorded micro-algae bloom in Chinese coastal waters dates back to 1933, and since 1990, the frequency and intensity of harmful algal blooms (HABs) have increased significantly. Fish-killing HABs, caused by species such as Karenia mikimotoi and Karlodinium digitatum, have become more severe. Other major toxic algal blooms have caused economic losses and occasional human mortality. Due to global climate and marine environment changes, as well as anthropological activities, there is a potential for the emergence of new types of HABs in China in the future.

Harmful algal blooms and associated fisheries damage in East Asia: Current status and trends in China, Japan, Korea and Russia

Setsuko Sakamoto et al.

Summary: Occurrences of harmful algal blooms (HABs) and associated fisheries damage have been continuously monitored since the 1970s along the coasts of East Asia. The highest bloom numbers were recorded in 1980 (Japan), in 1998 (Korea) and in 2003 (China), followed by decreasing trends in these countries. The shift in microalgal species composition, from dominance by diatoms to dinoflagellates after the 1980s in Korea and from diatoms to small haptophytes and cyanobacteria after 2013 in eastern Russia, has been observed.

Harmful algal blooms and their effects in coastal seas of Northern Europe

Bengt Karlson et al.

Summary: Harmful algal blooms (HAB) are a recurrent and widespread issue in northern Europe, affecting aquaculture industry and socioeconomic interests. The major HAB taxa causing fish mortalities include Chrysochromulina leadbeateri, Prymnesium polylepis, Phaeocystis spp., Dinophysis spp., and Alexandrium species. Continued monitoring and understanding of these HABs is essential to prevent and mitigate their impacts.

Marine harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the United States: History, current status and future trends

Donald M. Anderson et al.

Summary: Harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the U.S. have seen a significant increase in both qualitative and quantitative aspects over the past thirty years, with a wider range of toxic species and toxins, expanded affected areas, and new poisoning syndromes emerging. Factors contributing to this expansion include human activities like nutrient pollution and ocean warming, necessitating new approaches to monitoring and management for resource managers and public health officials.

Morpho-molecular description of a new HAB species, Pseudocochlodinium profundisulcus gen. et sp. nov., and its LSU rRNA gene based genetic diversity and geographical distribution

Zhangxi Hu et al.

Summary: Harmful algal blooms (HABs) caused by an unknown dinoflagellate species have been frequently occurring in the Pearl River Estuary, China since 2006. Through morphological examinations and phylogenetic analyses, a new genus and species named Pseudocochlodinium profundisulcus has been proposed to describe this previously unknown organism. Further investigation revealed the widespread presence of this species in China and the global distribution of the new genus.
