Recurrent large-scale sea urchin mass mortality and the establishment of a long-lasting alternative macroalgae-dominated community state

Summary: The relationship between sea urchins and noncrustose macroalgae is often nonlinear, with an abrupt shift between barren and macroalgae-dominated states occurring when sea urchin abundance exceeds a critical threshold. Two mass mortality events in 2009-2010 and 2018 in the Canary Islands drastically reduced sea urchin populations and led to phase shifts towards noncrustose macroalgae dominance. These events differed in intensity between La Palma and Tenerife Islands, but both resulted in drastic reductions of sea urchin populations without signs of recovery.

Summary: The high use of freshwater in agricultural systems globally necessitates the development of alternative sources of water for irrigation to meet future food demand. Recycled wastewater, brackish water, and desalinated brackish water are proposed as non-conventional water resources. The study found the presence of various free-living amoebae in different irrigation water qualities and soils, along with the growth of pathogenic bacteria, potentially increasing the risk of infections in agroecosystems.
