Effectiveness of Externally Bonded and Near Surface-Mounted CFRP Reinforcement in Flexural Strengthening of RC Beams: Numerical Approach

Ayah A. Alkhawaldeh et al.

Summary: This paper compares the effectiveness of externally bonded (EB) reinforcement and near surface-mounted (NSM) reinforcement techniques using carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips for strengthening reinforced concrete beams. The study investigates different parameters including strengthening technique, CFRP quantity, and NSM-CFRP distribution. Finite element (FE) models are developed and analyzed using ABAQUS software, and the results are validated with experimental data. The findings show that, for the same area of CFRP laminates, beams strengthened with the NSM system achieve higher ultimate strength but relatively lower stiffness compared to beams strengthened with the EB system.

Design of ductile H-anchorage for strengthening reinforced concrete beams with prestressed FRP

Cheng Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that H-anchorage can improve the utilization of FRP in tension, significantly increase the load capacity of reinforced concrete beams, while maintaining good ductility. The increase in ductility was more prominent in high-strength concrete specimens, and the use of prestressed FRP effectively improved flexural performance within the elastic range.

Natural Jute Fibre-Reinforced Polymer Composite System for Posttensioned Beam Strengthening in Flexure

D. P. Archana et al.

Summary: The study examines the use of natural jute fiber-reinforced polymer composites for strengthening prestressed beams, finding that the full wrapping technique increases flexural strength by 23% and the strip wrapping technique increases it by 10%. The results suggest that the jute fiber-reinforced polymer material has great potential for structural strengthening due to its high deformability index and effectiveness.

Experimental evaluation of factors affecting the behaviour of reinforced concrete beams strengthened by NSM CFRP strips

Ashraf KamalEldin Shraif Suliman et al.

Summary: This study investigated the bond between carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) and concrete in near-surface mounted (NSM) strengthened structural members, identifying groove depth, fibre shape, groove surface, and wrapping distribution as critical factors affecting capacity and failure mode of specimens. Results aimed to find optimal conditions for maximum performance.
