Neutralization potency of monoclonal antibodies recognizing dominant and subdominant epitopes on SARS-CoV-2 Spike is impacted by the B.1.1.7 variant

Carl Graham et al.

Summary: The interaction between the SARS-CoV-2 Spike receptor binding domain (RBD) and the host cell receptor ACE2 is crucial for viral entry, with RBD being the main target for neutralizing antibodies. Mutations in RBD, N-terminal domain (NTD), and S2 subunits of Spike have been found in circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants. This study isolates and characterizes monoclonal antibodies targeting different epitopes on RBD, NTD, and S2 to understand how these mutations affect antigenicity and neutralization resistance.

Pediatric Vaccination During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Bradley K. Ackerson et al.

Summary: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on pediatric vaccination coverage was assessed in Southern California. Vaccination uptake declined during the pandemic, with some recovery in younger children. Measles-containing vaccine uptake improved in older children, but total vaccine uptake remained lower, indicating the need for additional strategies to increase vaccination coverage.

Summary: This study developed a new nucleic acid amplification test to detect SARS-CoV-2 variants with high sensitivity and specificity. Screening a large cohort of infected individuals in the San Francisco Bay Area revealed a rapid increase in the prevalence of the L452R variant over time.

Reduced sensitivity of SARS-CoV-2 variant Delta to antibody neutralization

Delphine Planas et al.

Summary: The SARS-CoV-2 B.1.617 Delta variant, first identified in India in 2020, has become dominant in some regions and is spreading to many countries. This variant shows resistance to certain monoclonal antibodies and antibodies in convalescent sera, as well as reduced neutralization by some COVID-19 vaccines. Administration of two doses of the vaccine is needed for a neutralizing response against the Delta variant.

The biological and clinical significance of emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants

Kaiming Tao et al.

Summary: The emergence of multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants has significant impacts on the epidemiological and clinical aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic, including increased virus transmission rates, heightened risk of reinfection, and reduced effectiveness of neutralizing antibodies and vaccines. These variants have introduced new challenges to COVID-19 research, necessitating additional avenues of laboratory, epidemiological, and clinical studies.

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on routine immunization

Martin O. C. Ota et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted global immunization services, leading to interruptions in routine childhood immunization in many regions and countries. While immunization rates have shown some recovery, a substantial number of vulnerable individuals remain unvaccinated. Catch-up vaccination campaigns are necessary to address existing shortfalls in vaccine uptake. Guidance to mitigate these effects continues to evolve.
