Long-term evaluation of the effect of peracetic acid on a mixed aerobic culture: Organic matter degradation, nitrification, and microbial community structure

Jinchen Chen et al.

Summary: Peracetic acid (PAA) is widely used as a disinfectant in various industries, including poultry processing, but its potential inhibitory effect on biological wastewater treatment processes in this industry is not well understood. This study found that high levels of H2O2 and PAA directly added to bioreactors significantly impacted aerobic degradation and nitrification processes, primarily due to enzyme inhibition rather than cell viability loss. Fast recovery of these processes was observed once the direct addition of H2O2 and PAA solution ceased.

Improved stability of up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor treating starch wastewater by pre-acidification: Impact on microbial community and metabolic dynamics

Jiang Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that pre-acidification equipped UASB process showed better treatment performance and stability in handling starch wastewater compared to a one-stage UASB reactor, with improvements in substrate utilization diversity and microbial community structure stability. The core functional microbiota of Anaerolineaceae/Methanosaeta in the pre-acidification equipped UASB reactor exhibited superior acetogenic methanogenesis abilities. In contrast, the dominance of Methanobacterium, a hydrogenotrophic methanogen, in the archaeal community of the one-stage UASB reactor indicated a high hydrogen turn-over rate.
