Does exogenous carbon source always promote algal biomass and nutrients removal in algal-bacterial wastewater remediation?

Yuming Zhong et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the interactive network analysis between algae and wastewater-borne bacteria to identify beneficial bacteria and assess the impact of glycerol on a beneficial bacterial strain. Results showed that co-cultivating microalgae and Pseudomonas dramatically enhanced biomass yield and nutrients removal efficiencies, but the addition of glycerol led to the collapse of the algal-bacterial consortia in the late stage of co-cultivation, reducing treatment efficiency and biomass. It is suggested that non-fermentative bacteria as main probiotics in algal-based wastewater remediation should be used to provide small-molecule-weight organics as carbon sources.

Trade-offs between effluent quality and ammonia volatilisation with CO2 augmented microalgal treatment of anaerobically digested

Donna L. Sutherland et al.

Summary: The diversion of food waste from landfill to waste-to-energy facilities is a viable option for supporting the circular bioeconomy. However, liquid centrate produced during anaerobic digestion is high in total ammonia, necessitating further treatment before discharge. Utilizing microalgal wastewater treatment systems augmented with CO2 can effectively reduce total ammonia concentrations and ammonia volatilisation. Increasing CO2 levels and hydraulic retention time can impact nitrogen losses, biomass productivity, and effluent quality in the system.

Microalgae and ammonia: A review on inter-relationship

Wai Siong Chai et al.

Summary: This paper examines the inter-relationship between microalgae and ammonia as carbon reduction options, as well as their future prospects. It also discusses the related technologies, challenges, and the role of governmental policies in driving development in this field. Further research on environmental impact and energy consumption is needed to improve upon current fossil fuel usage.

High-throughput screening for heterotrophic growth in microalgae using the Biolog Plate assay

Donna L. Sutherland et al.

Summary: Microalgae produce valuable organic compounds and are increasingly being used in novel product production and biotechnological applications. A high-throughput method using a cost-effective Biolog plate was evaluated for rapid screening of microalgal metabolism, with good agreement found between Biolog plate results and traditional culture techniques. High-throughput assessments like this can be useful tools for selecting species, determining metabolic capacity, and establishing optimal culture conditions for microalgal biotechnology applications.
