HMDB 5.0: the Human Metabolome Database for 2022

David S. Wishart et al.

Summary: The Human Metabolome Database (HMDB) has been providing comprehensive information about human metabolites since 2007, and has undergone significant improvements and upgrades in its latest update, HMDB 5.0. These improvements include an increase in the number of metabolite entries, enhancements to metabolite descriptions, new visualization tools, and more accurately predicted spectral data sets. These upgrades are aimed at improving the usability and potential applications of the HMDB in various fields, including human metabolomics, exposomics, lipidomics, nutritional science, biochemistry, and clinical chemistry.

Circulating bile acids as a link between the gut microbiota and cardiovascular health: impact of prebiotics, probiotics and polyphenol-rich foods

Rose-Anna G. Pushpass et al.

Summary: This review examines the impact of probiotics, prebiotics, and polyphenol-rich foods on lipid abnormalities, emphasizing their potential effects on bile acid metabolism and cardiovascular health. Despite inconsistent results from human studies, there is evidence suggesting associations between these dietary components and improved risk markers for lipid abnormalities.

Cholic acid and deoxycholic acid induce skeletal muscle atrophy through a mechanism dependent on TGR5 receptor

Johanna Abrigo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of bile acids on skeletal muscle atrophy and found that bile acids induce protein degradation and muscle wasting through the TGR5 receptor. The role of TGR5 in muscles plays a significant role in the process of muscle atrophy.

Exercise training and diet-induced weight loss increase markers of hepatic bile acid (BA) synthesis and reduce serum total BA concentrations in obese women

Kelly E. Mercer et al.

Summary: Exercise and diet-induced weight loss in obese, sedentary, insulin-resistant women significantly impact bile acid metabolism, leading to a decrease in fasting serum BA concentrations and an increase in C4 concentrations. Furthermore, post-intervention, the responsiveness of bile acid synthesis to postprandial inhibition is improved after exercise and weight loss.

The Importance of Objective Stool Classification in Fecal 1H-NMR Metabolomics: Exponential Increase in Stool Crosslinking Is Mirrored in Systemic Inflammation and Associated to Fecal Acetate and Methionine

Leon Deutsch et al.

Summary: This study introduced a minimal pressure approach (MP) to measure stool material crosslinking, finding that MP values increased exponentially with higher consistency, enabling stratification of samples exhibiting mixed BSS classes. The results provide insights into the relationship between stool hardness and human health, suggesting that the MP approach could be useful for future microbiome and metabolome studies.

Analysis of eight bile acids in urine of gastric cancer patients based on covalent organic framework enrichment coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Jinxiu Lyu et al.

Summary: Using a COF material as the stationary phase for an SPE column in conjunction with LC-MS/MS allows for the quantitative analysis of eight bile acids in human urine, providing a non-invasive method for early detection of gastric cancer. The synthesized COF material demonstrated better enrichment efficiency compared to commercial columns, leading to a significant increase in sensitivity. This study suggests that bile acids could serve as potential biomarkers for gastric cancer and offers a new approach for non-invasive diagnosis.

Metabolomic profiles of being physically active and less sedentary: a critical review

Qu Tian et al.

Summary: This systematic review identified metabolites associated with physical activity, fitness, and sedentary time in community-dwelling adults, highlighting metabolic pathways linked to higher physical activity levels and less sedentary time, including lipid, amino acid, and hormone metabolism. Studies suggested active skeletal muscle biosynthesis supported by enhanced oxidative phosphorylation and glycolysis, with changes in lipid and estrogen metabolism, in physically active and less sedentary individuals. Future longitudinal studies are needed to determine if these metabolomic changes contribute to the health benefits of physical activity.

Urinary Tartaric Acid, a Biomarker of Wine Intake, Correlates with Lower Total and LDL Cholesterol

Ines Dominguez-Lopez et al.

Summary: Postmenopausal women may benefit from wine consumption for cardiovascular health, as indicated by the strong association observed between urinary tartaric acid, a biomarker of wine consumption, and wine intake. Additionally, urinary tartaric acid was inversely correlated with total and LDL cholesterol, suggesting potential beneficial effects on lipid profile. Other biochemical and anthropometric variables did not show significant associations with urinary tartaric acid.
