Unravelling the Role of Rumen Microbial Communities, Genes, and Activities on Milk Fatty Acid Profile Using a Combination of Omics Approaches

Sokratis Stergiadis et al.

Summary: Comparing rumen microbiome in cows producing milk with different fatty acid profiles revealed that cows with higher SFA content in milk had increased abundances of lactic acid bacteria and acetogenic Proteobacteria in their rumen. Microbial genes correlated with milk fatty acids were found to influence rumen metabolite concentrations, explaining a significant portion of the variation in milk fatty acid profiles. Metagenomics and metabolomics analyses highlighted differences in rumen metabolic activities among cows with contrasting FA profiles, indicating adaptations to factors like reduced rumen pH and carbohydrate fermentation.

Immune-metabolic-inflammatory markers in Holstein cows exposed to a nutritional and environmental stressing challenge

Damiano Cavallini et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the immunologic and metabolic markers in dairy cows after exposure to high-grain diet and housing system changes. The results show that the cows responded with a significant decrease in rumination and changes in various blood markers. These findings could help develop strategies to mitigate stressor effects and serve as a model for testing stress nutritional modulators.

Metabolites Secreted by Bovine Embryos In Vitro Predict Pregnancies That the Recipient Plasma Metabolome Cannot, and Vice Versa

Enrique Gomez et al.

Summary: This study utilized mass spectrometry-based metabolomics as a predictive tool to analyze metabolites in embryo culture media and recipient plasma for accurate prediction of pregnancy in cattle. Specific metabolites in embryos and recipients were found to play a crucial role in pregnancy establishment and development, highlighting the importance of efficient lipid metabolism and phenolic changes in influencing pregnancy outcomes.

Preweaning nutrient supply alters serum metabolomics profiles related to protein and energy metabolism and hepatic function in Holstein heifer calves

L. N. Leal et al.

Summary: Increasing preweaning milk supply to dairy calves has been associated with improved growth and future lactation performance. However, the specific biological mechanisms behind this relationship remain unclear. This study aimed to characterize the growth and metabolic profiles of calves fed different levels of milk supply preweaning, revealing distinct metabolic differences in energy, protein, and liver metabolism.

Impact of Weaning and Maternal Immune Activation on the Metabolism of Pigs

Bruce R. Southey et al.

Summary: Weaning and prenatal stress can impact the offspring's liver function and metabolic pathways. Weaning leads to changes in hepatic metabolism, oxidative stress, and inflammation, while prenatal stress affects amino acids and cholesterol levels. The findings suggest that these stressors can influence metabolic products associated with health and behavior disorders in the peripheral and central nervous systems.
