Saliva Metabolomics in Dry Mouth Patients with Head and Neck Cancer or Sjogren's Syndrome

Havard Hynne et al.

Summary: Through metabolomics analysis, we found different metabolic profiles in patients with dry mouth conditions caused by head and neck cancer and primary Sjogren's syndrome. The dysregulation of purinergic signaling and amino acid metabolism may play a role in the pathophysiology of dry mouth. This finding is important for diagnosis and understanding the underlying mechanisms of dry mouth.

The Potential of Metabolomics in Biomedical Applications

Vanessa Gonzalez-Covarrubias et al.

Summary: Metabolomics provides a comprehensive and precise picture of human phenotypes, allowing for the discovery of biomarkers and the understanding of molecular mechanisms. Its application in precision medicine has shown great potential in improving human health. This review highlights the trends and impacts of metabolomics in various diseases, longevity, and drug development. It emphasizes the importance of identifying distinct metabolomic profiles for the discovery and improvement of clinical strategies. In the future, metabolomics will become a routine tool for diagnosing and monitoring health and disease, aging, and drug development.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Differences in Spectroscopic Properties of Saliva Taken From Normal Subjects and Oral Cancer Patients: Comparison Studies

Benjamaporn Supawat et al.

Summary: The study characterized the spectra of saliva samples from patients with oral cancer disease and normal subjects using fluorescence, absorption, and H-1-NMR spectroscopy, and found that the characteristic spectra were different between the two groups. Differences were observed in autofluorescence emission spectra and synchronous spectra of saliva between normal subjects and oral cancer patients, as well as in absorption intensity and metabolites detected via H-1-NMR spectroscopy. These findings suggest the potential for identifying saliva biomarkers to distinguish patients with oral cancer disease from normal subjects.

A systematic review of proteomic biomarkers in oral squamous cell cancer

Summary: Head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC) is the most common cancer associated with chewing tobacco, with oral cancer being the most common subsite. Lack of availability of early detection and risk assessment biomarkers is a challenge, but the development of new protein biomarkers can aid in early diagnosis and targeted treatment for improved prognosis.

Identification of Possible Salivary Metabolic Biomarkers and Altered Metabolic Pathways in South American Patients Diagnosed with Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Mariana de Sa Alves et al.

Summary: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common type of oral cancer, and finding specific biomarkers is crucial. This study identified several potential salivary biomarkers for OSCC, but further validation with larger populations is needed. This is the first report on salivary metabolomics of South American oral cancer patients.
