Dynamics of the normal gut microbiota: A longitudinal one-year population study in Sweden

Lisa M. Olsson et al.

Summary: The composition and function of the gut microbiota vary significantly between individuals, and this variation can potentially be explained by intra-individual dynamics. The abundance of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Bifidobacterium species is negatively associated with the stability of the gut microbiota composition. In contrast, facultative anaerobes and aerotolerant bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Lactobacillus acidophilus, show extensive variation independent of compositional stability. The contribution of intra-individual variance to the total variance is greater for functional pathways than for microbial species. Therefore, reliable quantification of microbial features requires repeated sampling to address intra-individual variations of the gut microbiota.

Consensus Report: Definition and Interpretation of Remission in Type 2 Diabetes

Matthew C. Riddle et al.

Summary: Improvement of glucose levels in people with diabetes can occur spontaneously or after medical interventions. Newer forms of treatment may lead to more sustained improvement. However, the terminology and objective measures for defining this process are not established, and the long-term risks and benefits are not well understood. An international expert group proposed the term "remission" and HbA1c < 6.5% as the usual diagnostic criterion. They also suggested active observation and further research on predictors and outcomes of remission.

Short-term outcomes of revisional surgery after sleeve gastrectomy: a comparative analysis of re-sleeve, Roux en-Y gastric bypass, duodenal switch (Roux en-Y and single-anastomosis)

Amin Andalib et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the short-term outcomes of various revisional bariatric surgeries after failed primary sleeve gastrectomy. Results showed that biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS) resulted in the largest weight loss, while Roux en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and BPD/DS had similar rates of major complications. Overall, revisional procedures offer further weight loss for patients with failed primary SG.

Hypothalamic bile acid-TGR5 signaling protects from obesity

Ashley Castellanos-Jankiewicz et al.

Summary: Activation of hypothalamic TGR5 signaling reduces body weight and fat mass by promoting negative energy balance, counteracting diet-induced obesity. Conversely, downregulation of hypothalamic TGR5 expression may contribute to the development of obesity. These findings highlight the important role of hypothalamic TGR5 signaling in the pathophysiology of obesity.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass contributes to weight loss-independent improvement in hypothalamic inflammation and leptin sensitivity through gut-microglia-neuron-crosstalk

Jiesi Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that RYGB surgery not only reduces adiposity, but also improves hypothalamic gliosis, inflammatory signaling, and ER stress, leading to enhanced leptin signaling and responsiveness. RYGB interferes with hypothalamic ER stress and TLR4 signaling to restore the anorexigenic action of leptin.

Projection of Gut Microbiome Pre- and Post-Bariatric Surgery To Predict Surgery Outcome

Meirav Ben Izhak et al.

Summary: BMI and diabetes can affect the gut microbiome composition. Bariatric surgery has large variabilities in the outcome. The microbiome was previously shown to be a good predictor for multiple diseases, and in this study, it was found that the microbiome before surgery can be used to predict surgery outcomes. The postsurgery microbiome drifts further away from the lean microbiome than the microbiome of the presurgery obese patients, indicating the potential for microbiome-based presurgery decision making.
