Metabolomics in chronic pain research

Shweta Teckchandani et al.

Summary: Metabolomics research in chronic pain is still in its early stages, with most studies being pilot studies. Some identified alterations include abnormalities in glutamate and testosterone metabolism, as well as metabolic imbalances caused by the gut microbiome.

Metabolomic analysis coupled with extreme phenotype sampling identified that lysophosphatidylcholines are associated with multisite musculoskeletal pain

Ming Liu et al.

Summary: The study aimed to identify metabolic biomarkers for multisite musculoskeletal pain (MSMP) using a metabolomics approach. Results showed that women and younger people were more likely to have MSMP. MSMP was associated with incontinence, worse functional status, longer pain duration, and higher levels of cholesterol in the blood. Among the metabolites measured, two lysophosphatidylcholines were found to be significantly associated with MSMP and could be novel metabolic markers for this condition.

The burden of musculoskeletal pain and the role of topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in its treatment. Ten underpinning statements from a global pain faculty

Stephen B. McMahon et al.

Summary: This document summarizes the role and efficacy of topical NSAIDs in acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain by analyzing evidence from randomized controlled trials. It provides efficacy data for three main topical NSAIDs and discusses potential directions for further research based on gaps in knowledge.

Sphingomyelin is involved in multisite musculoskeletal pain: evidence from metabolomic analysis in 2 independent cohorts

Feng Pan et al.

Summary: Metabolic dysfunction has been suggested to be involved in musculoskeletal pain, with sphingomyelin metabolism found to play a role in the pathogenesis of multisite musculoskeletal pain (MSMP). Furthermore, the circulating level of SM C18:1 could serve as a potential marker in the management of MSMP.
