Fecal carriage of extended spectrum beta-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae among HIV infected children at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital Gondar, Ethiopia

Biruk Bayleyegn et al.

Summary: This study revealed a considerable rate of ESBL carriage among HIV infected children, with most isolates showing resistance to amoxicillin. History of antibiotic use was identified as an independent factor associated with ESBL carriage. Regular screening for antibiotic resistance on HIV patients before prescription and large-scale surveys on antibiotic resistance in healthy communities may be crucial.
