Aegerolysins from the fungal genus Pleurotus - Bioinsecticidal proteins with multiple potential applications

Anastasija Panevska et al.

Summary: Aegerolysin proteins produced by Pleurotus mushrooms interact specifically with sphingolipid-enriched membranes, showing strong toxicity towards insect cells. Their mode of membrane binding differs from bacterial origin complexes, and can potentially be utilized in treatments and insect control.

Immunological Responses of Marine Bivalves to Contaminant Exposure: Contribution of the -Omics Approach

Teresa Balbi et al.

Summary: Studies have identified marine bivalves as a key group for studying immunological responses to pollutant exposure, with the need for measuring immune biomarkers in hemocytes and hemolymph to evaluate overall impact. Utilizing cutting-edge technology such as -omics can reveal the complexity of immune responses and help understand the mechanisms behind immune dysfunction induced by pollutants. Integrating different approaches can contribute to knowledge on sensitivity of bivalve species to multiple stressors and their susceptibility to disease.

What Can Mushroom Proteins Teach Us about Lipid Rafts?

Maja Grundner et al.

Summary: The lipid raft hypothesis aims to explain the organization and behavior of lipids in biological membranes. While indirect evidence supported the idea of lipid-ordered domains enriched in sphingomyelin and cholesterol, tools were lacking to demonstrate their existence in living cells. Recent identification of sphingomyelin/cholesterol binding proteins from mushrooms has shed light on these liquid-ordered domains in mammalian cells.

Dissecting Out the Molecular Mechanism of Insecticidal Activity of Ostreolysin A6/Pleurotolysin B Complexes on Western Corn Rootworm

Matej Milijas Jotic et al.

Summary: OlyA6 is a protein produced by oyster mushrooms that binds strongly to insect-specific membrane sphingolipid CPE. Together with PlyB, it exhibits potent insecticidal activity against the western corn rootworm by forming transmembrane pore complexes in the insect midgut. The molecular mechanism of action involves specific interactions with CPE, leading to pore formation in the insect midgut.
