Life-cycle environmental assessment of solar-driven Multi-Effect Desalination (MED) plant

Mohamed Alhaj et al.

Summary: The research conducted a life-cycle assessment on an optimized solar-driven multi-effect desalination process to investigate the extent to which the environmental impact of conventional thermal desalination processes could be minimized through the integration of concentrated solar power collectors. It was found that most of the life-cycle impact occurred during the operation phase, primarily due to electric pumping energy. The solar-driven process reduced climate change impact by 10 kg-CO2 eq. per 1 m(3) of freshwater compared to conventional methods, with the linear Fresnel collector outperforming the parabolic trough collector in terms of environmental impact.

Sustainability Assessment and Techno-Economic Analysis of Thermally Enhanced Polymer Tube for Multi-Effect Distillation (MED) Technology

Furqan Tahir et al.

Summary: The study compared the conventional MED desalination plant with titanium tubes to one using thermally enhanced polymer composite tubes. The results showed that the polymer composite tubes had economic and carbon emission advantages, reducing the cost of the MED evaporator by 40% and lowering carbon emissions by 35% compared to titanium tubes.

A zero liquid discharge system integrating multi-effect distillation and evaporative crystallization for desalination brine treatment

Qian Chen et al.

Summary: The paper proposes a zero liquid discharge system utilizing multi-effect distillation and evaporative crystallization to treat desalination brine with a salinity of 70 g/kg. The thermodynamic analysis shows that heat consumption can be effectively reduced by increasing the number of MED stages, while the specific heat transfer area decreases significantly with higher heat source temperatures. Techno-economic analysis demonstrates that cost reduction can be achieved through employing cost-effective heat sources and reducing heat consumption.
