Seasonal Dynamics of Soil Bacterial Community under Long-Term Abandoned Cropland in Boreal Climate

Alena Zhelezova et al.

Summary: Microbial community structure and abundance in long-term abandoned cropland were influenced by monthly changes in moisture and temperature. The growing period exhibited higher bacterial abundance and diversity compared to the dormant period. The relative abundances of certain bacterial taxa varied seasonally, with Actinobacteria and Chloroflexi more abundant in the dormant period. Soil and air temperature positively correlated with microbial gene abundances.

Microbiological Indicators of Soil Ecological Functions: A Review

D. A. Nikitin et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the most relevant microbiological characteristics that can serve as indicators of soil ecological functions: bioresource, phytosanitary, as well as the functions of carbon transformation and plant nutrition. The appropriate microbiological indicators of the plant nutrition function of soil are the enzyme activities associated with the nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, as well as molecular species-specific markers of arbuscular mycorrhiza. Gene abundances of phytopathogens and their antagonists can serve as indicators of soil phytosanitary function.

Soil Microbial Diversity Affects the Plant-Root Colonization by Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi

Doroteia Alves Ferreira et al.

Summary: The study revealed a significant positive correlation between soil microbial diversity and the symbiosis between plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). This finding contradicts the diversity-invasibility hypothesis and highlights the potential overall helper effect of soil biodiversity on plant-AMF symbiosis.

High microbial diversity stabilizes the responses of soil organic carbon decomposition to warming in the subsoil on the Tibetan Plateau

Meng Xu et al.

Summary: Soil microbes, especially microbial biodiversity, play a crucial role in regulating the temperature sensitivity of soil organic carbon (SOC) decomposition. This study conducted in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau revealed that the ratio of gram-positive to gram-negative bacteria in topsoil and the diversity of soil bacteria and fungi in subsoil are closely related to the temperature sensitivity of SOC decomposition. The findings suggest that maintaining microbial biodiversity is essential for stabilizing SOC decomposition in alpine montane ecosystems under climate change.

Vital roles of soil microbes in driving terrestrial nitrogen immobilization

Zhaolei Li et al.

Summary: This study synthesized 1350 observations of gross soil nitrogen immobilization rate (NIR) to identify patterns and drivers of NIR globally. The results showed that NIR was influenced by various climate factors and soil properties, with soil microbial biomass carbon being a key driver. The efficiency of transforming immobilized nitrogen to microbial biomass nitrogen was lower in croplands than in natural ecosystems.

Afforestation suppresses soil nitrogen availability and soil multifunctionality on a subtropical grassland

Leilei Ding et al.

Summary: The study revealed that afforestation of grassland significantly alters soil properties and affects soil multifunctionality, with a notable decrease in available nitrogen concentration driven primarily by soil microbes. The impact of functional diversities on soil nitrogen availability is stronger, and the niche complementarity effect plays a dominant role in soil nitrogen functions and multifunctionality.

Effects of Different Grazing Disturbances on the Plant Diversity and Ecological Functions of Alpine Grassland Ecosystem on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Wenlong Li et al.

Summary: Grazing in alpine grasslands on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau can have complex effects on ecosystem variables, with overall positive impacts on species richness and ecological indices, but negative impacts on aboveground biomass, belowground biomass, soil organic carbon, soil total nitrogen, and soil moisture. The effects of different grazing management approaches vary, with moderate grazing, long-term grazing, and winter grazing being beneficial for plant diversity.

Plant and soil properties mediate the response of soil microbial communities to moderate grazing in a semiarid grassland of northern China

Lingling Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that moderate grazing has negative impacts on the richness and diversity of soil microbial communities, as well as weakening community interactions, with more stability observed in bacterial communities than fungal communities. Changes in aboveground plant biomass and soil properties had a significant influence on soil bacterial communities, while plant nitrogen content, soil NO3--N, and NO3/NH4 ratio were the main influencers of fungal communities. The composition of plant communities played a key role in driving the composition of fungal communities.

Sedimentary ancient DNA reveals a threat of warming-induced alpine habitat loss to Tibetan Plateau plant diversity

Sisi Liu et al.

Summary: Studies along elevational gradients show that the richest plant taxa occurred during the cool phase after glacier retreat around 14,000-10,000 years ago, while a decrease in plant taxa richness was observed during the warm early to mid-Holocene when forests expanded. Livestock grazing since 3,600 years ago has had a weak impact on promoting plant taxa richness. Based on inferred dependencies, future warming-related alpine habitat loss is likely to lead to a substantial decrease in plant taxa richness.

Summary: The study showed that long-term warming interacts with fertilization to stimulate the activities of C, N, and P hydrolases, with warming and WN treatment significantly increasing the enzymatic C:N ratio and vector length, indicating higher energy and resource limitation for soil microorganisms.

Variation in Soil Microbial Communities Along an Elevational Gradient in Alpine Meadows of the Qilian Mountains, China

Yulong Duan et al.

Summary: In the alpine meadow ecosystems of the Qilian Mountains in China, bacterial and eukaryota diversity increased linearly with elevation, while archaeal diversity also showed an increase but was not significant. The microbial community compositions were influenced by regional climate and local soil properties, with intradomain links being more important than interdomain links in the microbial network. The results provide insights into soil microbial diversity along elevational gradients and implications for microbial responses to climate change in alpine ecosystems.
