Effect of nitrogen limitation on growth, biochemical composition, and cell ultrastructure of the microalga Picocystis salinarum

Ronald Tarazona Delgado et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of nitrogen limitation on the growth and biochemical composition of the green alga Picocystis salinarum, a potential raw material for biodiesel. It found that nitrogen limitation led to a decrease in cell density, dry weight, and chlorophyll content, while increasing carotenoid, lipid, and carbohydrate content. High nitrogen limitation significantly increased total lipid content, making it a suitable candidate for biodiesel production.

Exploration of Microalgal Species for Nutrient Removal from Anaerobically Digested Swine Wastewater and Potential Lipids Production

Zhihui Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, six microalgal strains were evaluated for their nutrient removal and biodiesel production potential in anaerobically treated swine wastewater. Two selected strains, Chlorella vulgaris FACHB-8 and Chlorella sp. FACHB-31, showed good performance in removing nitrogen, phosphorus, and ammonia nitrogen, as well as producing significant amounts of lipids. The fatty acid profiles of these strains mainly consisted of C-16:0, C-18:1, C-18:0, and C-18:2.

Economic Considerations on Nutrient Utilization in Wastewater Management

Josef Marousek et al.

Summary: There is a consensus that Spirulina can be used for wastewater management and biorefining feedstock, although the economic challenges remain. Spirulina cultivated in wastewater serves as a biodiesel source, with oil extracted in feedstock turning into biodiesel. Blends of Spirulina biodiesel show improved efficiency and reduced emissions, contributing positively to greenhouse gas reduction.
