Bacteria in biofloc technology aquaculture systems: roles and mediating factors

Godwin Abakari et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the factors that mediate bacterial diversity, abundance, and dynamics in biofloc technology (BFT) aquaculture systems, as well as the relationships between bacteria and animal food and major nutrients. The article also reviews analytical techniques for determining bacterial integrity and function, and discusses the factors that affect microbial community structure, water quality, and production performance. Future investigations to characterize bacteria in BFT aquaculture systems and their roles and mediating factors are suggested.

Production performance, inorganic nitrogen control and bacterial community characteristics in a controlled biofloc-based system for indoor and outdoor super-intensive culture of Litopenaeus vannamei

Wujie Xu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a commercial-scale biofloc-based tank system for shrimp culture in an efficient and environmentally friendly way. The results demonstrated the efficiency of the system under limited water exchange, with outdoor environmental conditions showing better production performance and inorganic nitrogen control.

Quantifying the importance of external and internal sources to the gut microbiota in juvenile and adult shrimp

Xuechen Zhang et al.

Summary: Research has found that the majority of gut microbiota in aquatic animals is derived from the juvenile stage, and remains relatively stable as the animals mature. This was further validated through structural equation modeling.

Supplemental carbon sources applied in biofloc technology aquaculture systems: types, effects and future research

Godwin Abakari et al.

Summary: Biofloc technology (BFT) systems have been focused on sustainability in the past decade, with a key emphasis on maintaining the optimal carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio through supplementation with organic carbon sources. This review examines the types of carbon sources and addition strategies in BFT systems, discussing their effects on culture organisms, microorganisms, water quality, and nutritional quality of bioflocs. The review provides suggested organic carbon sources and addition strategies, along with proposing further research directions in this field.

Deep insight into bacterial community characterization and relationship in the pond water, sediment and the gut of shrimp (Penaeus japonicus)

Li Zhou et al.

Summary: This study characterized the bacterial community in the gut of shrimp, culture water, and sediment, revealing significant differences in composition and function among different habitats. The sediment was found to be a major contributor to the shrimp gut bacterial community, highlighting the importance of considering environmental sources in microbial management strategies for shrimp farming.
