The epidemiology of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli serogroup O157 in England, 2009-2019

Saira Butt et al.

Summary: This study describes the epidemiology of STEC O157 infection in England over 11 years of enhanced surveillance. The number of cases decreased, along with a decrease in phage type 21/28 infections. While the incidence of HUS decreased, the percentage of cases with bloody diarrhea and hospitalization remained stable. The number of outbreaks decreased, but refined typing methods linked more cases to each outbreak.

The emerging importance of Shiga toxin- producing Escherichia coli other than serogroup O157 in England

Bhavita Vishram et al.

Summary: The implementation of GI-PCR in England has led to a four-fold increase in the detection of non-O157 STEC between 2014 and 2018. O26, O146, O91, O128, O103, and O117 were the most common non-O157 serogroups, with higher rates of bloody diarrhea in O26 and O103 cases compared to O117. The proportion of cases under 5 years of age was significantly higher in STEC O157 cases than non-O157 STEC cases.

Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli Outbreaks in the United States, 2010-2017

Summary: The study summarizes the epidemiology and transmission routes of STEC outbreaks in the United States from 2010 to 2017, finding that foodborne transmission is the most common route, and there are differences between O157 and non-O157 outbreaks in terms of food sources, demographic characteristics, and severity.
