High salinity gradients and intermediate spatial scales shaped similar biogeographical and co-occurrence patterns of microeukaryotes in a tropical freshwater-saltwater ecosystem

Changyu Zhu et al.

Summary: The study found that environmental factors play a significant role in determining the structure of microeukaryotic communities, with salinity playing a key role in shaping these communities and networks. Abundant communities have a stronger influence on the overall microeukaryotic communities and are more sensitive to environmental changes, while rare communities show stronger interspecific relationships.

Distribution Patterns of Ciliate Diversity in the South China Sea

Weiwei Liu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the distribution patterns of ciliate diversity in the South China Sea and compared ciliate communities in different water areas. Taxonomic and ecological traits revealed the geographical pattern of ciliates on a large scale, with taxonomic traits being more effective for distinguishing local community variations. Environmental selection was found to be the major process structuring ciliate communities in intertidal water, while spatial processes played significant roles in neritic and oceanic waters, with environmental selection having the most important impact on distributions among ecological traits.

Integrative taxonomy and molecular phylogeny of three poorly known tintinnine ciliates, with the establishment of a new genus (Protista; Ciliophora; Oligotrichea)

Rui Wang et al.

Summary: This study provides new insights into the classification of the suborder Tintinnina, documenting three poorly known species and establishing a new genus, Antetintinnopsis gen. nov., based on unique cytological features. The findings support the taxonomic significance of cytological characters and contribute to expanding our understanding of tintinnine biodiversity and evolution.

Concatenated data and dense taxon sampling clarify phylogeny and ecological transitions within Hypotricha

Jiahui Xu et al.

Summary: By adding 857 environmental sequences to the hypotrich LSU rDNA gene sequences, this study significantly increased the resolution for hypotrich phylogenetics. The traditional hypotrich orders were found to be polyphyletic, with a monophyletic core Urostylida in the trees. The inferred ecological transitions in Hypotricha were found to be influenced by genes, methods, and taxa.

Spatial distribution of planktonic ciliates in the western Pacific Ocean: along the transect from Shenzhen (China) to Pohnpei (Micronesia)

Hungchia Huang et al.

Summary: Planktonic ciliates are major consumers in pelagic ecosystems, playing pivotal roles in the transfer of matter and energy in the microbial loop. This study investigated the species composition and distribution patterns of ciliates from off-shore to open ocean along a transect from Shenzhen to Pohnpei, with the major driving factors identified as silicate and pigmented nanoflagellates. It highlights the necessity of using techniques to reveal community composition at higher taxonomic resolutions in future ciliate studies.
