Endophytic Microbiome Variation Among Single Plant Seeds

A. F. Bintarti et al.

Summary: The seed microbiome is important for plant microbiome assembly and the transmission of beneficial symbionts. A new DNA extraction protocol from individual seeds revealed high microbiome variability at the plant level, suggesting that pooling seeds from the same plant could be utilized for microbiome assessments. This study contributes to understanding the plant-microbiome interactions that support the health of agricultural and environmental ecosystems.

Persistent microbiome members in the common bean rhizosphere: an integrated analysis of space, time, and plant genotype

Nejc Stopnisek et al.

Summary: The study applied concepts from macroecology to quantify core microbial members in the rhizosphere of common beans, identifying 48 bacterial taxa consistently present across different dimensions. This approach provides a systematic way to identify the most stably-associated microbiome members with the plant, showing reliable enrichment and time-independence of their association.

The treasure inside barley seeds: microbial diversity and plant beneficial bacteria

Nina Bziuk et al.

Summary: The genotype of barley significantly influences both the seed and rhizosphere microbiota. The core seed microbiome contains dominant bacterial genera, and many endophytic isolates show plant beneficial properties through the production of secondary metabolites. New breeding strategies should prioritize genotypes with a high abundance of beneficial microbes.

Microbiome Modulation-Toward a Better Understanding of Plant Microbiome Response to Microbial Inoculants

Gabriele Berg et al.

Summary: Plant-associated microorganisms play important roles in plant growth, performance, and health, and understanding these roles is crucial for designing sustainable agricultural microbial inoculants. Effects of microbial inoculants on the indigenous plant microbiome include transient shifts, stabilization or increase of microbial diversity, stabilization or increase of plant microbiome evenness, restoration of dysbiosis or reduction of pathogen-induced shifts, targeted shifts toward beneficial plant members, and suppression of potential pathogens.

Profiling, isolation and characterisation of beneficial microbes from the seed microbiomes of drought tolerant wheat

Holly Hone et al.

Summary: This study investigated the differences in seed microbiomes between drought tolerant and drought susceptible wheat lines, discovering that certain beneficial microbes were enriched in the seed microbiomes of drought tolerant wheat lines and had the ability to promote growth under drought conditions.

Prolonged drought imparts lasting compositional changes to the rice root microbiome

Christian Santos-Medellin et al.

Summary: The study shows that drought stress can alter the composition of rice root microbiomes, with certain important bacterial groups significantly enriched during drought and maintaining a lasting impact even after rewatering, leading to increased instability in the root microbiota.
