Bites by the noble false widow spider Steatoda nobilis can induce Latrodectus-like symptoms and vector-borne bacterial infections with implications for public health: a case series

John P. Dunbar et al.

Summary: The Noble false widow spider Steatoda nobilis has expanded its range globally, posing a potential threat to native ecosystems and public health. Envenomations by S. nobilis can lead to symptoms ranging from mild to severe, including pain, tremors, fatigue, nausea, hypotension, and bacterial infections, with some cases requiring hospitalisation.

Phenotype-Genotype Correlations and Distribution of Key Virulence Factors in Enterococcus faecalis Isolated from Patients with Urinary Tract Infections

Yomna A. Hashem et al.

Summary: The study investigated the correlation between different virulence factors in Enterococcus faecalis clinical isolates causing urinary tract infections. Variability in virulence gene distribution was observed among the isolates, with no specific pattern associated with UTI. All isolates carried at least ace and pil genes for adherence, and six isolates carried the entire set of investigated genes. Statistical analysis revealed cyl as a biomarker for hemolytic activity, fsrB as a diagnostic biomarker for gelatinase activity, and gelE-sprE as predictors for biofilm formation strength in E. faecalis.
