Electromagnetic viscosity in complex structured environments: From blackbody to quantum friction

M. Oelschlaeger et al.

Summary: We investigate the nonconservative dynamics of an atom in a complex structured electromagnetic environment at finite temperature. The frictional force acting on the atom when it moves along the environment's translation-invariant axis is due to the nonequilibrium interaction with the fluctuating quantum electromagnetic field, which establishes a privileged reference frame. We study the impact of quantum and thermal fluctuations on the interaction, revealing qualitatively different types of viscosity.

Spectroscopic effects of velocity-dependent Casimir-Polder interactions induced by parallel plates

Joseph Durnin et al.

Summary: Casimir-Polder interactions cause energy and momentum exchange between microscopic and macroscopic bodies. However, the dynamics of these effects have not been experimentally investigated because currently attainable atomic velocities are dominated by static effects. In this study, a more easily realizable setup involving a moving atom between two stationary plates is analyzed to establish the spectroscopic Casimir-Polder effects on the atom and their velocity dependence.

Van der Waals Interactions of Moving Particles with Surfaces of Cylindrical Geometry

George Dedkov

Summary: General nonrelativistic theory has been developed to study the tangential and radial image forces as well as van der Waals forces acting on charged and neutral particles moving parallel to the axis of a cylinder. Numerical calculations for metal and dielectric materials, as well as Cs atoms, show that dynamic vdW potential can be repulsive for metal cylinders under certain conditions, while it increases relative to static potential for Si material with changing velocity-distance parameters.

Open Quantum Systems' Decay across Time

Summary: This letter reexamines commonly used approximations and presents a theory for decay in open quantum systems that covers all time scales, including Markovian and linear response results as limiting cases. The theory is then applied to the phenomenon of quantum friction.

Manipulating matter by strong coupling to vacuum fields

Francisco J. Garcia-Vidal et al.

Summary: In the past decade, there has been a surge of interest in using hybrid light-matter states to control the properties of matter and chemical reactivity. Experimental and theoretical studies have shown that these hybrid states can enhance properties like transport, magnetism, and superconductivity, as well as modify (bio)chemical reactivity. This multidisciplinary field has great potential for further exploration.
