SARS-CoV-2 infection and oxidative stress: Pathophysiological insight into thrombosis and therapeutic opportunities

Mohammad Shah Alam et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has presented unprecedented challenges to global health, with many patients developing severe disease and needing immediate hospitalization. Underlying comorbidities such as diabetes and obesity are associated with more severe infections. Melatonin Targets Metabolism in Head and Neck Cancer Cells by Regulating Mitochondrial Structure and Function

Ana Guerra-Librero et al.

Summary: Melatonin induces a shift to aerobic mitochondrial metabolism in head and neck cancer cells, resulting in changes in mitochondrial morphology, function, fusion, and fission, increased oxidative phosphorylation, and inhibited glycolysis. This leads to increased ROS production, apoptosis, mitophagy, decreased cell proliferation, and suggests new molecular pathways involved in melatonin's anticancer activity. High doses of melatonin used for its cytotoxic effects may also impact HNSCC cells through melatonin receptors.
