Redox signaling through zinc activates the radiation response in Deinococcus bacteria

Romaric Magerand et al.

Summary: Deinococcus bacteria exhibit high resistance to radiation and DNA damage, which relies on the metalloprotease IrrE-induced DNA repair gene expression by cleaving transcriptional repressor DdrO. Experimental findings show that reactive oxygen species can stimulate the metalloprotease activity of IrrE in Deinococcus, leading to DdrO cleavage.

Redox controls RecA protein activity via reversible oxidation of its methionine residues

Camille Henry et al.

Summary: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) oxidize RecA recombinase, altering its DNA repair and recombination activities. However, this damage can be suppressed by methionine sulfoxide reductases MsrA/B, maintaining RecA homeostasis control.ROS not only damage DNA structure directly, but also prevent repair of DNA damage by inhibiting RecA activity.

The Bacillus subtilis monothiol bacilliredoxin BrxC (YtxJ) and the Bdr (YpdA) disulfide reductase reduce S-bacillithiolated proteins

Ahmed Gaballa et al.

Summary: The bacterial cytosol is maintained in a reducing environment with the help of the thiol bacillithiol (BSH); a variety of proteins and enzymes work together to counteract protein S-bacillithiolation resulting from disulfide stress, forming a complex redox network.

Overview of structurally homologous flavoprotein oxidoreductases containing the low Mr thioredoxin reductase-like fold - A functionally diverse group

Marta Hammerstad et al.

Summary: Structural studies show that enzymes have a limited number of unique folds, but can evolve to perform diverse functions. This review focuses on enzymes containing the low molecular weight thioredoxin reductase fold, presenting a comprehensive overview of the diversity and structural similarities among these flavoprotein oxidoreductases.

Relevance of peroxiredoxins in pathogenic microorganisms

Marcos Antonio de Oliveira et al.

Summary: The oxidative and nitrosative responses produced by animals and plants serve as crucial defenses against pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. Peroxiredoxins are enzymes that play a key role in decomposing hydroperoxides and can also function as molecular chaperones and phospholipases, contributing to microbial protection against host defenses. Some peroxiredoxins have been identified as virulence factors, indicating their significance in pathogenesis and potentially as targets for new antimicrobial drugs.

Highly accurate protein structure prediction with AlphaFold

John Jumper et al.

Summary: Proteins are essential for life, and accurate prediction of their structures is a crucial research problem. Current experimental methods are time-consuming, highlighting the need for accurate computational approaches to address the gap in structural coverage. Despite recent progress, existing methods fall short of atomic accuracy in protein structure prediction.
