Umbu Fruit Peel as Source of Antioxidant, Antimicrobial and α-Amylase Inhibitor Compounds

Leilson de Oliveira Ribeiro et al.

Summary: This study optimized the extraction conditions for bioactive compounds from umbu fruit peel using thermal-assisted solid-liquid extraction, and evaluated the antioxidant, antimicrobial, and inhibitory effects of the optimized extract. The results showed that the optimal conditions for the extraction were a temperature of 74 degrees C, ethanol concentration of 37%, and a solid-liquid ratio of 1:38. The optimized extract exhibited strong antioxidant activity and antimicrobial effects against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as inhibitory activity against alpha-amylase. The bioactive profile of the optimized extract revealed that it mainly consisted of phenolic acids and flavonoids.

Polyphenols-Gut Microbiota Interrelationship: A Transition to a New Generation of Prebiotics

Diana Plamada et al.

Summary: This review summarizes studies conducted on the topic in the past five years and highlights the importance of polyphenols as prebiotics. Polyphenols interact with intestinal microbes in the colon and release valuable metabolites. However, little is known about the chemistry of metabolic routes used by different bacteria species, and further clinical studies are needed to investigate the effect in humans.

In vitro models of gut digestion across childhood: current developments, challenges and future trends

Elora Fournier et al.

Summary: This article reviews the development of child gut physiology and the use of in vitro models to study it. Research has shown that the child digestive tract undergoes significant changes in the first few years of life, including colonization of gut microbiota and exposure to environmental compounds. In vitro models are increasingly used due to ethical and technical limitations, and can simulate different stages of digestion from the oral phase to the colon compartment. These models have important applications in nutritional, pharmaceutical, and microbiological studies.
