Safety Profile of Nutraceuticals Rich in Coumarins: An Update

Simona Codruta Heghes et al.

Summary: Coumarins, a family of benzopyrones, are widely distributed in nature and can be found in seeds, fruits, flowers, or roots of various plant species. They are present in significant concentrations in certain herbs or spices used as nutraceuticals, but can also be found in cosmetics or household products due to their pleasant odor. Accidental exposure to high doses of coumarins can lead to harmful effects in patients. This review provides a summary of the latest published data on preclinical and clinical studies with natural coumarins, focusing on the investigation of general and specific toxicity, to better understand the safety profile of these valuable compounds. Regulatory aspects regarding the use of natural coumarins in different regions of the world are also reviewed.

Antioxidant and Mitochondria-Targeted Activity of Caffeoylquinic-Acid-Rich Fractions of Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium L.) and Silver Wormwood (Artemisia ludoviciana Nutt.)

Justina Kamarauskaite et al.

Summary: This study focused on fractionating caffeoylquinic acids from cultivated wormwood and silver wormwood herb acetone extracts and evaluating their phytochemical profiles, antioxidant activities, and effects on kidney mitochondrial functions. The results showed that the silver wormwood extracts had the highest content of caffeoylquinic acids and exhibited the greatest radical scavenging and reducing activities, indicating their potential as antioxidants and cytochrome-c-reducing agents for the treatment of mitochondrial-pathway-associated pathologies.

Chlorogenic acid ameliorates Klebsiella pneumoniae-induced pneumonia in immunosuppressed mice via inhibiting the activation of NLRP3 inflammasomes

Junhao Zeng et al.

Summary: Chlorogenic acid (CGA) possesses various bioactive properties such as antioxidation, anti-inflammation, and anti-bacteria. The study showed that CGA treatment can decrease the severity of pneumonia induced by Klebsiella pneumoniae, reduce lung injury, and improve inflammation by inhibiting inflammasome activation.
