Compromised Blood Flow in the Optic Nerve Head after Systemic Administration of Aldosterone in Rats: A Possible Rat Model of Retinal Ganglion Cell Loss

Yasushi Wada et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of systemic administration of aldosterone on optic nerve head blood flow, retinal vessel diameters, and retinal ganglion cell loss in rats. The results showed that aldosterone caused retinal vessel constriction and a decrease in retinal ganglion cells without changes in intraocular pressure or blood pressure.

A review of potential novel glaucoma therapeutic options independent of intraocular pressure

Wesam Shamseldin Shalaby et al.

Summary: Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy that leads to retinal ganglion cell degeneration and visual field loss, making it the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Intraocular pressure (IOP) is the only modifiable risk factor known to slow or halt disease progression; however, glaucomatous damage persists in nearly 50% of patients despite significant IOP reduction. Various studies have explored non-IOP-related factors and interventions that can protect against or delay glaucomatous neurodegeneration and preserve vision. Experimental studies have shown effective neuroprotection in glaucoma, and clinical trials are ongoing to provide strong evidence of their effectiveness.
