HRMS Characterization, Antioxidant and Cytotoxic Activities of Polyphenols in Malus domestica Cultivars from Costa Rica

Mirtha Navarro-Hoyos et al.

Summary: This study found that the flesh of Jonagold apples is rich in polyphenols, particularly procyanidin trimers, tetramers, and pentamers, which exhibit high antioxidant and cytotoxic activities, showing a significant negative correlation with total phenolic content; the results suggest that Jonagold flesh may have potential health benefits.

Polyphenolic QTOF-ESI MS Characterization and the Antioxidant and Cytotoxic Activities of Prunus domestica Commercial Cultivars from Costa Rica

Mirtha Navarro-Hoyos et al.

Summary: The study found that extracts obtained under neutral conditions from different commercial cultivars of Prunus domestica plum trees exhibited better antioxidant and cytotoxic effects. Additionally, there was a positive correlation between phenolic content and antioxidant activity, while a negative correlation was observed between phenolic content and cytotoxicity. The number of procyanidins showed a significant negative correlation with cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines.

An Easy-to-Use Procedure for the Measurement of Total Phenolic Compounds in Olive Fruit

Pilar Luaces et al.

Summary: Virgin olive oil is closely associated with the antioxidant and health-promoting properties of the Mediterranean diet due to its phenolic compounds. A convenient and sensitive spectrophotometric method was developed for quantifying total phenolic compounds in olive fruits. The method can provide a precise estimate of the antioxidant and functional properties of olive oil by examining the phenolic content of the olive fruit.

Scientific and Medical Research Support can Increase Export Earnings from Turmeric (Curcuma longa)

Rajendra Prasad et al.

Summary: India, the largest producer and exporter of turmeric in the world, accounts for 80% of global production with an export value of US 236 million dollars in 2018. Turmeric, also known as Indian Gold, is cultivated in various states but yields can be improved through agricultural research. Scientific research is needed to quantify its main ingredient, Curcumin, and other important components, as well as medical research to prove its effectiveness in treating diseases. Marketing pure ingredients as medicines can generate more foreign exchange than selling raw turmeric, highlighting the importance of research and development in this sector.

Turmeric and its bioactive constituents trigger cell signaling mechanisms that protect against diabetes and cardiovascular diseases

Huiying Amelie Zhang et al.

Summary: Turmeric, a plant with a history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, has been used for the treatment of chronic diseases, including metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. Curcumin, the main bioactive compound in turmeric, has been shown to modulate various cell signaling pathways and provide protective effects. Clinical trials have shown potential preventative and therapeutic benefits of turmeric against diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

How Does the Phenol Structure Influence the Results of the Folin-Ciocalteu Assay?

Melanie Platzer et al.

Summary: The FC assay does not measure the polyphenol content of a sample but rather determines its reducing capacity. Different results were observed for phenols representing different subgroups, indicating that the FC results depend on the number of fulfilled Bors criteria for the structure of the phenols.
