Molecular Mechanisms of Malignant Transformation of Oral Submucous Fibrosis by Different Betel Quid Constituents-Does Fibroblast Senescence Play a Role?

Pangzhen Zhang et al.

Summary: Betel quid (BQ), a mixed package chewed by over 600 million people worldwide, is strongly associated with the development of potentially malignant and malignant diseases of the mouth. The composition of BQ varies geographically, and its capacity to induce disease reflects its distinct chemical composition.

A Comprehensive Analysis of the Role of Oxidative Stress in the Pathogenesis and Chemoprevention of Oral Submucous Fibrosis

Luciano Saso et al.

Summary: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic potentially malignant disorder associated with oxidative stress. This scoping review highlights the significance of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis and treatment of OSMF. The use of antioxidant supplements was found to improve clinical outcomes. Further well-designed studies are needed to develop mechanism-based interventions for managing OSMF.

Malignant transformation of oral submucous fibrosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Omar Kujan et al.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to determine the proportion of patients developing oral carcinomas following a diagnosis of oral submucous fibrosis (OSF). The meta-analysis showed that close to 4% of OSF patients may develop oral cancer, with cases of oral epithelial dysplasia having a higher potential for malignant transformation.
