Copper sulfide with morphology-dependent photodynamic and photothermal antibacterial activities

Chinmaya Mutalik et al.

Summary: Metal chalcogenides, especially copper sulfide, have been studied for their unique structures and photoactivities as antibacterial agents. Different structures of copper sulfide were synthesized for antibacterial applications, showing that nanosheets and nanoparticles had superior light-driven antibacterial effects compared to microspheres. The mechanisms involved photocatalytic reactions generating reactive oxygen species and heat, leading to bacterial degradation under simulated solar and near-infrared light irradiation.

Role of Water in CaCO3 Biomineralization

Hao Lu et al.

Summary: Through specific experiments, it was found that water plays an important role in the CaCO3 biomineralization process for sea urchin spine generation. The study results show that the structure of interfacial water is perturbed differently when Ca2+ and CO32- are present together compared to only adding Ca2+. These findings support a nonclassical mineralization pathway for sea urchin spine generation and highlight the importance of protein hydration in biomineralization.

Facet-dependent gold nanocrystals for effective photothermal killing of bacteria

Sibidou Yougbare et al.

Summary: Gold-based plasmonic nanocrystals, specifically gold nanobipyramids with (111) plane, showed higher photothermal performance compared to gold nanorods with (200) plane in noninvasive photothermal therapy, as demonstrated by experimental studies and density function theory (DFT) simulations. Water desorption energy on the Au(111) surface was found to be lower than on the Au(100) surface, indicating easier desorption for photothermal heating. Additionally, AuNBPs with (111) plane exhibited higher efficiency in photothermal therapy against Escherichia coli (E. coli) under near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation compared to AuNRs.

Multimode CaCO3/pneumolysin antigen delivery systems for inducing efficient cellular immunity for anti-tumor immunotherapy

Jie Lu et al.

Summary: This study successfully induced cellular immunity for tumor vaccines by combining the multi-functional vaccine adjuvant pneumolysin (PLY) and carrier calcium carbonate (CaCO3) nanoparticles to construct multimode antigen delivery systems CaCO3/PLY. The minimalist tumor vaccine OVA/CaCO3/PLY exhibited significant anti-tumor efficacy in both preventive and therapeutic aspects, highlighting the promising platform offered by the multimode antigen delivery system CaCO3/PLY.
