A review on current research status of the surface modification of Zn-based biodegradable metals

Wei Yuan et al.

Summary: Zinc and its alloys have been proposed as candidate materials for biodegradable metals (BMs) due to their corrosion behavior and biocompatibility. However, surface treatment for Zn-based BMs is desired to better control their degradation behavior. This review summarizes the current surface modification methods of Zn-based alloys, the recent progress in biomedical Zn-based BMs and their surface modification strategies, and proposes future perspectives for designing bio-functionalized coatings on Zn-based BMs for orthopedic and cardiovascular applications.

Coronary stent CD31-mimetic coating favours endothelialization and reduces local inflammation and neointimal development in vivo

Sergio Diaz-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the impact of CD31-mimetic metal stent coating on the adherence of endothelial cells, blood elements, strut coverage, and neointimal growth. In vitro experiments showed reduced activation of primary human coronary artery endothelial cells and blood platelets/leukocytes with CD31-mimetic discs. In vivo results demonstrated that CD31-mimetic stents could effectively prevent in-stent thrombosis and stenosis, promoting arterial wall healing.

Summary: A universal method of using cell-made extracellular matrices (ECMs) to coat substrates for therapeutic cell delivery is recommended to improve integration of implantable materials with surrounding tissues. ECM-coated substrates show promising results in supporting endothelial regeneration and inhibiting neointimal growth in in vivo experiments, making them more effective than traditional stents.

Summary: The present study investigates the short- and long-term clinical outcomes of self-made polyurethane-covered stents in managing coronary artery perforation during percutaneous coronary intervention. Results show high success rates of delivery and sealing of severe perforations, with favorable long-term clinical outcomes despite higher in-hospital mortality rates after implantation of self-made PU-CS. Durable endothelium-mimicking coating for surface bioengineering cardiovascular stents

Qing Ma et al.

Summary: Research has shown that mimicking the functions of native endothelium on cardiovascular stent surfaces by releasing nitric oxide and mimicking glycocalyx can effectively reduce restenosis. A mussel-inspired amine-bearing adhesive coating has been developed to tether the NO-generating species and glycocalyx-like component, creating a durable endothelium-mimicking surface with high bioactivity retention and sustained NO generation. This strategy demonstrates long-term physiological effects on inhibiting thrombosis, inflammation, and intimal hyperplasia, enhancing re-endothelialization, and efficiently reducing restenosis.

A tailored extracellular matrix (ECM)-Mimetic coating for cardiovascular stents by stepwise assembly of hyaluronic acid and recombinant human type III collagen

Li Yang et al.

Summary: A new recombinant human type III collagen (hCOLIII) without platelet binding sites but with affinity for endothelial cells was explored, together with hyaluronic acid (HA), to form an ECM-mimetic multilayer coating. The coating demonstrated significant thromboprotective properties and guided vascular cell fate by supporting endothelial cell proliferation and inhibiting smooth muscle cell proliferation. Implantation of a polylactic acid (PLA) stent coated with hCOLIII in rabbit abdominal aorta showed enhanced endothelialization, suppressed inflammatory response, inhibition of neointimal hyperplasia, and superior thromboprotection, indicating the potential of hCOLIII-based ECM-mimetic coating as a tailored blood-contacting material for cardiovascular stents.
