Development of parvalbumin neurons and perineuronal nets in the visual cortex of normal and dark-exposed cats

Elise M. Aronitz et al.

Summary: During development, the visual system maintains high plasticity, enabling neural circuits to be refined by visual experience. However, plasticity potential decreases with age due to the accumulation of plasticity-inhibiting characteristics. Perineuronal nets (PNNs) primarily surround inhibitory neurons and have a limited capacity to inhibit plasticity. Dark conditions can reduce the density of PNNs and the size of inhibitory neurons, indicating that PNNs may provide trophic support to the cells they surround.

Altered Relationship Between Parvalbumin and Perineuronal Nets in an Autism Model

Dan Xia et al.

Summary: Altered function of inhibitory neurons, particularly the PV-containing neurons with reduced density and intensity, is observed in ASD patients and model mice. The relationship between PV and PNN intensities is disrupted in VPA mice, which can be corrected by reducing PNN levels, indicating a potential contribution to the pathology of ASD.

Inhibitory control in neuronal networks relies on the extracellular matrix integrity

Egor Dzyubenko et al.

Summary: Our study shows that the brain's ECM maintains E-I balance by supporting inhibitory control through the retention of inhibitory connectivity. Depletion of the ECM in mature neuronal networks leads to a decrease in inhibitory synapse density and individual postsynaptic scaffolds, which is partially compensated by an increase in synaptic strength.

OTX2 Homeoprotein Functions in Adult Choroid Plexus

Anabelle Planques et al.

Summary: This study explores the functional roles of OTX2 in adult choroid plexus, highlighting its importance in processes such as cell signaling, adhesion, and regulation of secreted factors. OTX2 is shown to impact immune responses, stress reactions in the choroid plexus, and influence the mRNA isoforms of proteins involved in oxidative stress response and DNA repair. Mass spectrometry analysis also reveals potential OTX2 protein partners in the choroid plexus and other target regions, involved in cell adhesion, chromatin structure, and RNA processing. Overall, OTX2 plays crucial roles in regulating choroid plexus function and brain homeostasis throughout life.

Regulation of Perineuronal Nets in the Adult Cortex by the Activity of the Cortical Network

Gabrielle Devienne et al.

Summary: Inhibition of parvalbumin-expressing (PV) interneurons in adult mice can induce perineuronal net (PNN) regression, while activation of these neurons does not reduce PNN density. The density of PNN in the adult cortex is regulated by local changes in network activity, which can be triggered through modulation of PV interneurons.
