A computational framework for magnetically hard and soft viscoelastic magnetorheological elastomers

M. Rambausek et al.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive theoretical and numerical framework for modeling finite strain magnetorheological elastomers (MREs). Two software implementations are developed and the numerical schemes used for simulating the surrounding air are analyzed. The results show significant viscoelastic effects under high-rate magnetic fields, and strong coupling between viscoelasticity and magnetization rotation.

New experimental insights into magneto-mechanical rate dependences of magnetorheological elastomers

M. A. Moreno et al.

Summary: Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) are promising multifunctional composites with the ability to respond to external magnetic fields, making them ideal for soft robotics and bioengineering applications. However, there is still a lack of understanding in the magneto-mechanical properties of these materials, particularly in relation to rate dependences. Further research is needed to explore the interactions of rate dependences on their magnetorheological behavior.

Summary: This study investigates the response of a magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) layer placed atop an electromagnetic coil both experimentally and numerically. Different types of layers are tested, with an iron core introduced to increase the magnetic field near the center of the MRE layer. The numerical simulation provides a deeper understanding of the complexity of magnetic fields and their interaction with the MRE layer, highlighting the importance of modeling the entire setup for predicting the response of MRE materials.

Magnetic Living Hydrogels for Intestinal Localization, Retention, and Diagnosis

Xinyue Liu et al.

Summary: Research has shown that by developing an ingestible magnetic hydrogel carrier, synthetic microbes can be localized and safely extended in the gastrointestinal tract for health monitoring and sustained drug release. The carrier allows living bacteria to be retained in the intestine for up to seven days, and by attaching a magnet to the abdominal skin, it resists peristaltic waves in the intestine, achieving device retention.

Influence of elastomeric matrix and particle volume fraction on the mechanical response of magneto-active polymers

D. Garcia-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: Magneto-active polymers (MAPs) filled with magnetic particles demonstrate mechanical responses under external magnetic fields, with potential applications in various fields. This study focuses on the mechanical characterization of MAPs constituted by PDMS filled with CIP particles and presents a nonlinear constitutive model that considers dependencies. The model provides theoretical guidance for magneto-active systems, especially in the realm of epithelial wound healing stimulation.

An explicit dissipative model for isotropic hard magnetorheological elastomers

Dipayan Mukherjee et al.

Summary: This study provides a modeling framework to describe the behavior of hard magnetorheological elastomers, showing good agreement between the model and numerical homogenization estimates, especially for stiff to moderately-soft matrix materials. The model considers a rotation-dependent remanent magnetic field as an internal variable and does not require an additional mechanical internal variable. Predictions from the model match well with experimental data.
