Integration of chemical and biological methods: A case study of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons pollution monitoring in Shandong Peninsula, China

Zeyuan Li et al.

Summary: This study monitored polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in seawater and sediment at eight sites in Shandong Peninsula, China and assessed their ecological risks and biological effects. The results showed that S2 site had the highest pollution, as indicated by both PAHs concentrations and biomarker responses. The integrated biomarker response was found to be a useful tool for marine environmental monitoring when combined with sediment quality guidelines.

A margin of safety approach for the assessment of environmentally realistic chemical mixtures in the marine environment based on combined passive sampling and ecotoxicity testing

Samuel Moeris et al.

Summary: A method for effect-based monitoring of environmentally realistic chemical mixtures was developed using passive sampling and ecotoxicity testing, with margin of safety calculated based on no observed effect concentrations. Diatom growth inhibition was observed at REF >= 3.2 across eight marine samples, with margins of safety found between REF 1.1-11.0. Reconstitution of extracts in HPLC water overcame solvent-related challenges in biotesting, allowing for REFs up to 44 to be achieved.

Nicholas T. Hayman et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the toxicity of PFOS and PFOA on four marine testing species and found the sensitivity ranking of M. galloprovincialis, S. purpuratus, P. lunula, and A. bahia. The results suggest that these species and endpoints are sensitive to PFAS, making them suitable for deriving toxicity data for other PFAS in marine ecosystems.

Toxicity assessment of total petroleum hydrocarbons in aquatic environments using the bioluminescent bacterium Aliivibrio fischeri

Marzieh Mirjani et al.

Summary: This study presents a rapid, sensitive, and cost-effective method for detecting TPHs using Aliivibrio fischeri bioluminescence inhibition bioassay. The optimal conditions for A. fischeri growth were determined, and both short-term and long-term toxicity assays were conducted. The results showed that the best time for bacterial growth was 16 hours after inoculation, and the optimal temperature and pH were 25 degrees Celsius and 7, respectively. The long-term assay returned results after 6 hours, with an EC50 of 1.77 mg/L for TPHs.

Chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs) in corals and water-SPM-sediment system in the Persian Gulf, Iran: A potential global threat for coral reefs

Ali Ranjbar Jafarabadi et al.

Summary: The study identified the presence of chlorinated paraffins in coral species at the Larak coral reef. Soft corals were found to accumulate more chlorinated paraffins than Scleractinian corals, with zooxanthellae and mucus accumulating more chlorinated paraffins than tissue and skeleton. Congener group patterns were dominated by C-13 for SCCPs and C-17 for MCCPs, with some alterations between mucus and other coral compartments. High loadings of chlorinated paraffins were detected in the skeletons of bleached corals, and a negative correlation between chlorinated paraffin levels and symbiodinium density was observed.

Karina Lotz Soares et al.

Summary: This study developed a fast and inexpensive method for the multi-residue determination of 59 contaminants of emerging concern in sediment, demonstrating high sensitivity, good linearity, satisfactory accuracy, and precision. The proposed method was found to be more environmentally friendly, cheaper, simpler, and faster compared to traditional techniques.

Screening of pharmaceuticals in coastal waters of the southern coast of Viti Levu in Fiji, South Pacific

Jasha Dehm et al.

Summary: The global reliance on pharmaceuticals and lack of effective treatment methods has led to a pseudo-persistence of pharmaceuticals in the environment. This study in Fiji's southern coastal waters found measurable concentrations of pharmaceutical residues, indicating that these pollutants are not limited to highly populated areas.

Use of comprehensive target analysis for determination of contaminants of emerging concern in a sediment core collected from Beppu Bay, Japan

Kou Nishimuta et al.

Summary: A comprehensive target analysis method was used to identify potential contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in sediment samples collected from Beppu Bay, Japan. The study detected 80 compounds, including three PAHs and TIPPP isomers, with concentrations increasing with decreasing sediment depth. These findings suggest that these chemicals may be categorized as potential CECs in marine environments.

Organic pollutants in marine samples from Tunisian coast: Occurrence and associated human health risks

Amel Jebara et al.

Summary: A total of 140 contaminants belonging to various classes were simultaneously analysed in marine samples from five stations along the coast of Tunisia, with only 28 residues detected above relative LOQ values. Sediment samples showed slight variation in contaminant residues among coastal stations, while aquatic plant leaves exhibited the highest residue accumulation. Fish samples from the central coast of Tunisia did not pose direct hazard to human health as values were lower than protection limits.

M. Thao Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study compared three polar passive sampling (PS) devices - Speedisk, SorbiCell, and POCIS - for effect-based water quality monitoring. Chemical analysis and bioassay responses showed that POCIS outperformed Speedisk in detecting a wider range of polar compounds, making it better suited for semi-quantitative effect-based monitoring strategies.

First study of passive sampling to monitor short-chain chlorinated paraffins in water: Comparing capabilities of Chemcatcher® and silicone rubber samplers

Mathilde Godere et al.

Summary: Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) are high-volume chemicals of concern, with limited documentation on their occurrence in water environments. Passive sampling has been increasingly used to monitor such complex mixtures efficiently and two proven passive samplers, silicone rubbers and Chemcatcher (R), have shown good applicability in water bodies.

Aquatic contaminants in Solomon Islands and Vanuatu: Evidence from passive samplers and Microtox toxicity assessment

A. J. Smith et al.

Summary: Water quality issues are increasing in many Pacific countries, with a lack of resources to assess complex chemical contaminants in countries like Vanuatu and Solomon Islands. The extent and impact of chemical contamination in the marine and coastal environment is poorly described, but new data from the use of passive chemical samplers and rapid ecotoxicology tests suggest concerning levels of agricultural and industrial pollutants. These techniques could be applied across the region to generate critical environmental management data and measure the impact of policy changes.

Dynamic passive sampling of hydrophobic organic compounds in surface seawater along the South Atlantic Ocean east-to-west transect and across the Black Sea

Jaromir Sobotka et al.

Summary: The study found that the spatial distribution of HOCs and emerging pollutants in the South Atlantic Ocean and the Black Sea is influenced by riverine inputs, ocean currents, and atmospheric deposition from continental plumes. The observed concentration gradients indicate that eastern South Atlantic Ocean receives DDT from sources in South Africa, while the emissions of endosulfan originate in South America, and elevated HOC concentrations in the northwestern Black Sea are related to their discharge by rivers from the European continent.
