Unusual dynamic susceptibility arising from soft ferromagnetic domains in MnBi8Te13 and Sb-doped MnBi2n Te3n+1 (n=2, 3)

Chaowei Hu et al.

Summary: MBT is the first intrinsic magnetic topological insulator and can be made ferromagnetic through specific methods. We studied the magnetic dynamics of several ferromagnetic MBT compounds and found a universal slow relaxation behavior, attributing it to irreversible domain movements. The soft nature of ferromagnetic domains was revealed by our magneto-optical measurements.

Summary: The new density functional approximation r(2)SCAN-D4 approaches the accuracy of hybrid functionals for general chemical applications while being as fast as generalized gradient approximations. It shows competitive errors of just 0.8% for main group molecules and outperforms hybrid functionals for transition metal complexes, with exceptional performance on chemical property databases.

Neutron diffraction study of magnetism in van der Waals layered MnBi2nTe3n+1

Lei Ding et al.

Summary: This study summarizes and compares the crystal and magnetic structures of two-dimensional van der Waals MnBi2nTe3n+1 (n = 1, 2, 3, 4) compounds, and discusses the effects of chemical composition on their magnetism. The presence of defects of Bi at the Mn site explains the continuously reduced saturated magnetic moments from n = 1 to n = 4. The experimental critical exponents generally suggest a three-dimensional character of magnetism in all the compounds.

Intertwined Topological and Magnetic Orders in Atomically Thin Chern Insulator MnBi2Te4

Dmitry Ovchinnikov et al.

Summary: MnBi2Te4 is a van der Waals magnet that can form a Chern insulator when all spins are aligned by an applied magnetic field. Through in-depth investigation, it is found that the bulk electronic structure evolves as the magnetic state is tuned, with a one-to-one correspondence with layer thickness, topological order, and magnetic state. Additionally, band topology and magnetic order in this newly discovered topological magnet exhibit an interplay during the continuous tuning of the magnetic state.

Orbital Complexity in Intrinsic Magnetic Topological Insulators MnBi4Te7 and MnBi6Te10

R. C. Vidal et al.

Summary: In this study, ARPES was used to investigate the surface electronic structure of two magnetic van der Waals compounds. Complex momentum-dependent orbital and spin textures were revealed, distinguishing between topological and trivial surface bands. The results indicate that the topologically nontrivial nature of these materials and the possibility of realizing a quantized anomalous Hall conductivity depend on surface termination.

Spectral signatures of the surface anomalous Hall effect in magnetic axion insulators

Summary: This study investigates the surface anomalous Hall effect and its spectral signatures in different magnetic topological phases, revealing distinct features of the surface anomalous Hall conductivity in the axion-insulator phase depending on magnetic homogeneity. The authors also predict a topological phase diagram of MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)(n) heterostructure and propose the chiral hinge mode as a signature of an axion insulator state.

Coexistence of ferromagnetism and topology by charge carrier engineering in the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi4Te7

Bo Chen et al.

Summary: This study presents an intrinsic ferromagnetic topological insulator (MTI) sample Mn(Bi0.7Sb0.3)4Te-7, which exhibits coexisting ferromagnetic behavior state and topological nontriviality. By engineering charge carriers through Sb substitution in the MnBi4Te7 matrix with antiferromagnetic ordering, significant modulation of magnetism is achieved, showing potential applications of MTIs. The clear demonstration of the intrinsic FM-MTI of Mn(Bi0.7Sb0.3)4Te-7 in this paper paves the way for further material optimization and studies on topology, magnetism, and charge carriers in topological materials.

Tuning magnetism and band topology through antisite defects in Sb-doped MnBi4Te7

Chaowei Hu et al.

Summary: The magnetic topological insulator MnBi4Te7 undergoes a transition from intrinsic antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic and then ferrimagnetic under Sb doping, attributed to the formation of Mn-(Bi,Mn-Sb) antisites resulting in modified interlayer magnetic interactions. This provides a platform for investigating emergent phenomena such as quantum anomalous Hall effect and Fermi arc states. Additionally, the band topology can be modified to realize a type-I magnetic Weyl semimetal phase with periodic antisites.
