Medium-range order dictates local hardness in bulk metallic glasses

Keita Nomoto et al.

Summary: The study revealed the hierarchical structure of BMGs through nanobeam electron diffraction experiments, showing that the local hardness of microscale domains decreases with the size and volume fraction of atomic clusters with higher local MRO. A model of ductile phase softening was proposed to enable the design of BMGs in the future by tuning the MRO size and distribution in the nanostructure.

Observation of cavitation governing fracture in glasses

Lai-Quan Shen et al.

Summary: The study provides experimental evidence that confirms the role of cavitation mechanism in glass fracture, revealing that self-organized nucleation, growth, and coalescence of nanocavities lead to the appearance of nanopatterns on fracture surfaces. This confirms the presence of nanoscale ductility in fracture of nominally brittle glasses.

Metallic Nanoglasses with Promoted β-Relaxation and Tensile Plasticity

Qun Yang et al.

Summary: Nanoglasses exhibit promoted beta-relaxation and enhanced microscale tensile plasticity compared to rapidly melt-quenched metallic glasses. The beta-relaxation is sensitive to the interfacial regions among grains in nanoglasses, showing a clear correlation between amorphous nanostructures and the beta-relaxation.

Enhancing ductility in bulk metallic glasses by straining during cooling

Rodrigo Miguel Ojeda Mota et al.

Summary: The research reveals that straining a bulk metallic glass during cooling from the supercooled region can enhance its bending ductility, as the structure is pulled up the potential energy landscape. This method of cooling the excited liquid can improve the ductility of bulk metallic glasses.
