Chemical design of self-propelled Janus droplets

Caleb H. Meredith et al.

Summary: In this study, the chemomechanical framework underlying the self-propulsion of biphasic Janus oil droplets solubilizing in aqueous surfactant is uncovered. The influence of oil mixing, droplet shape, and oil solubilization rates on droplet propulsion is elucidated. Spatiotemporal control over droplet swimming speed and orientation is demonstrated through the application of thermal gradients.

Coacervates as models of membraneless organelles

N. Amy Yewdall et al.

Summary: Coacervates are condensed liquid-like droplets formed by oppositely charged polymeric molecules, with remarkable material properties that have been extensively studied. They play an important role in the formation of membraneless organelles in living cells. Well-characterized coacervates can serve as useful models to better understand specific aspects of membraneless organelles.

Can coacervation unify disparate hypotheses in the origin of cellular life?

Basusree Ghosh et al.

Summary: Coacervates as protocell models play a unique role in studies of the origin of life, with their ability to form, partition solutes, support RNA catalysis, and readily deform their shape believed to be important for the formation of the first membrane-bound cells, supporting RNA-peptide evolution and primitive metabolism, and in replicating and proliferating through growth and division processes.

Bacteria-specific phototoxic reactions triggered by blue light and phytochemical carvacrol

Min Lu et al.

Summary: The combination therapy of blue light and phytochemical carvacrol was found to effectively kill a range of bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant strains, with significant efficacy against acute and established infections. This unique phototoxic reaction selectively targeted bacteria without adverse effects on mammalian cells or host DNA, providing a promising strategy to combat multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Thermally Driven Membrane Phase Transitions Enable Content Reshuffling in Primitive Cells

Roger Rubio-Sanchez et al.

Summary: Self-assembling single-chain amphiphiles in the prebiotic environment played a crucial role in the development of primitive cell cycles. However, the instability of prebiotic fatty acid-based membranes suggests that primitive cells could only function in stable environmental conditions. Membrane phase transitions, driven by environmental fluctuations, allowed for the generation of daughter protocells with reshuffled content, highlighting a potential environmentally driven mechanism for the emergence of functional primitive cells.

Solute induced jittery motion of self-propelled droplets

Prateek Dwivedi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of solutes on the activity of self-propelling droplets, revealing that the physicochemical interactions between solutes and droplet interface are at the root of this impact. The rate of solubilization of droplets affects the redistribution of surfactants on the interface, leading to changes in droplet motion trajectories in the presence of solutes.

Self-reproducing catalytic micelles as nanoscopic protocell precursors

Amit Kahana et al.

Summary: An alternative scenario suggests that reproducing nanoscopic lipid micelles with catalytic capabilities were forerunners of biopolymer-containing protocells, which gains support from experiments and reports on micellar catalysis and autocatalytic proliferation. The possibility of protocellular evolution being seeded by pre-RNA lipid assemblies is substantiated by studies on lipid modifications guiding protocellular complexification.

Autonomous Directional Motion of Actin-Containing Cell-Sized Droplets

Barbara Haller et al.

Summary: This study successfully engineered actin-driven Marangoni flows to achieve rotational and translational motion of emulsion droplets, laying a foundation for autonomous motion of cell-sized compartments. By tuning the interaction between actin filaments and Krytox, sustained autonomous rotation of droplets and transformation into rolling motion were achieved, leading to translational motility at velocities of 0.061 +/- 0.014 mu m s(-1) and overall displacement of several hundred micrometers within 30 min.

Interfacially-adsorbed particles enhance the self-propulsion of oil droplets in aqueous surfactant

Seong Ik Cheon et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the adsorption of solid particles on the surface of solubilizing oil droplets can significantly increase the droplets' self-propulsion speeds, with the highest speeds achieved at around 40% particle surface coverage. The addition of silica particles to oil-water interfaces provides a straightforward way to tune active droplet dynamics, showing the broad impact of this effect in different surfactants and oil droplet compositions.
