Efficient esterification reaction of palmitic acid catalyzed by WO3-x/mesoporous silica

Tailor Machado Peruzzolo et al.

Summary: Different solid catalysts were prepared by impregnation of tungsten species on commercial mesoporous silica. The catalytic results suggested that polytungstate species formed on the silica surface may play an important role in the esterification reaction.

Assessment of heterogeneous catalysts obtained from chicken egg shells and diatomite for biodiesel production

Diego Oliveira Cordeiro et al.

Summary: The high global dependence on nonrenewable energies has led to scientific studies focusing on developing renewable energy sources based on biofuel production. Biodiesel has been considered a viable alternative to mitigate the issues associated with the use of fossil fuels in diesel engines. However, the industrial production of biodiesel using homogeneous catalysts often results in complications, such as high purification costs and waste generation. To overcome these problems, researchers have developed a heterogeneous catalyst derived from chicken egg shells and diatomite for biodiesel production. The catalysts exhibited similar yields, indicating their potential in biodiesel production.

Heterogeneous acid catalyst preparation from olive pomace and its use for olive pomace oil esterification

Manel Ayadi et al.

Summary: By pyrolyzing, physically activating, and sulfonating olive pomace, the activated carbon's surface area significantly increased, its structure changed to become microporous, and tar residues and aliphatic hydrocarbons were removed. Comparing to coconut husk-based activated carbon, the olive pomace activated carbon fixed three times less sulfur. After esterification reaction, the acidity of olive pomace oil and glycerides were effectively reduced.

Hydrolysis of vegetable and microbial oils catalyzed by a solid preparation of castor bean lipase

Sara A. Machado et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the potential of lipase from castor bean seeds for hydrolysis of high-acidity oils. The enzyme showed higher specificity towards vegetable oils rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids. However, lower hydrolysis efficiencies were observed with microalgal oils, likely due to the presence of pigments.
