Costal sea level variability and extreme events in Monitos, Cordoba, Colombian Caribbean Sea

Lida S. Genes et al.

Summary: Flooding episodes in the Colombian Caribbean have damaging effects on coastal settlements, yet there is limited knowledge about these events and how they are influenced by various variables. This study analyzed the temporal variability of flood levels in Monitos-COrdoba, finding that runup dominates the total sea level variability at monthly, intra-annual, and inter-annual scales, while sea level anomaly plays a greater role at longer time scales. The trend of increasing total sea level, driven by the trend in sea level anomaly, suggests a rising frequency and magnitude of extreme sea levels.

Hydroperiod and Salinity Interactions Control Mangrove Root Dynamics in a Karstic Oceanic Island in the Caribbean Sea (San Andres, Colombia)

Jairo Humberto Medina-Calderon et al.

Summary: The study found that root production in mangroves on San Andres Island is controlled by soil stress conditions rather than nutrient availability, as seen in other karstic environments. Under low flooding duration, low salinity, and sulfide concentrations, the lowest root biomass allocation and production were observed. However, under high flooding duration and low oxygen conditions, root tissues reached the highest biomass and production values.

Interannual and seasonal variability of stratification and mixing in a high-discharge micro-tidal delta: Magdalena River

Luis J. Otero et al.

Summary: The study investigated the spatio-temporal variability of stratification and mixing at the mouth of the Magdalena River Delta under different ENSO phases using numerical model outputs. Results showed that the variability of stratification and mixing processes were influenced by seasonal changes and ENSO phases.

Salinity gradient power by reverse electrodialysis: A multidisciplinary assessment in the Colombian context

Mateo Roldan-Carvajal et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the implementation of salinity gradient power (SGP) based on reverse electrodialysis (RED) in the Caribbean region of Colombia. The study proposes a dynamic model for RED diffusion in the country. Results show that the Magdalena River mouth (MRM) has suitable conditions for harnessing SGP, but power output decreases when using MRM waters.

Vertical Land Motion as a Driver of Coastline Changes on a Deltaic System in the Colombian Caribbean

Juan Felipe Gomez et al.

Summary: To effectively address coastal changes, it is essential to recognize and characterize the specific processes influencing coastlines at local, regional, and global levels. Local subsidence plays a crucial role in coastal dynamics, interacting with factors such as sand supply, coastline orientation, and engineering structures to create complex erosion patterns.
