Emerging trends in science and news of climate change threats to and adaptation of aquaculture

Halley E. S. Froehlich et al.

Summary: Food production is a major contributor to climate change, and aquaculture is now facing increasing vulnerability to a changing climate. However, research and public awareness on the implications of climate change for aquaculture are still comparatively limited. The focus has mainly been on temperature, sea level rise, and ocean acidification, with coverage concentrated in Asia, Europe, and North/Central America.

Soya bean-based diets plus probiotics improve the profile of fatty acids, digestibility, intestinal microflora, growth performance and the innate immunity of beluga (Huso huso)

Homeyra Montazeri Parchikolaei et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of using different methods of probiotics Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis in soya bean-based diets on the physiology of beluga (Huso huso). Feeding fish with the 70%SBM-SPRAY2 diet improved fish growth and health, as evidenced by higher blood performance values and lower levels of total protein and RBC in fish fed with 70%SBM compared to other treatments. Additionally, fish fed with dietary probiotics showed significantly higher levels of lysozyme, alternative complement activity, and total viable counts.

The contribution of small-scale, privately owned tropical aquaculture to food security and dietary diversity in Bolivia

Sean Irwin et al.

Summary: The study found that emerging small-scale, business-oriented aquaculture systems can improve food security among aquaculture producers, but cannot significantly alter local dietary preferences. Aquaculture is associated with higher income, and women's involvement in aquaculture has positive impacts on productivity, profitability, and size of operation.

Nutritional immunity of fish intestines: important insights for sustainable aquaculture

Mahmoud A. O. Dawood

Summary: Intensive culture systems may weaken fish health due to infection and stress, but balanced diets can protect fish by maintaining intestinal health. The intestinal health is crucial for fish health, and the relationship between diet and intestinal health is associated with the general immune system.

Benefits of Dietary Polyphenols and Polyphenol-Rich Additives to Aquatic Animal Health: An Overview

Ehsan Ahmadifar et al.

Summary: Polyphenols, derived from plants, have shown to have beneficial effects on fish health and production in aquaculture. By impacting growth, immune function, disease resistance, and other aspects, polyphenols serve as safe and viable alternatives to synthetic chemical compounds in enhancing fish quality and productivity while reducing chemical and antibiotic use in aquatic ecosystems.

The positive effects of taurine on growth performance, immunohaematological parameters and stress response of farmed beluga (Huso huso) in both fresh water and brackish water

Mahbobeh Slami et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the taurine requirements in beluga in terms of growth, immune system, antioxidant enzyme activities, and stress response in both fresh water and brackish water. The results showed that beluga farmed in brackish water had better growth and immune response performance compared with fresh water. Specific taurine requirements for weight gain, lysozyme, IgM, and osmolality, as well as for cortisol levels before and after stress, were determined through data analysis.

Antibiotics control in aquaculture requires more than antibiotic-free feeds: A tilapia farming case

Min Zhou et al.

Summary: This study in southern China found that sealed-bag feeds for tilapia ponds did not contain tetracyclines but still had antibiotics and other compounds, while opened-bag feeds had added antibiotics. Sediments in the ponds showed high levels of salicylic acid and various pharmaceutical residues, including progesterone. The findings suggest that additional regulatory actions may be needed to control antibiotic abuse in aquaculture.

Antiparasitic and Antibacterial Functionality of Essential Oils: An Alternative Approach for Sustainable Aquaculture

Mahmoud A. O. Dawood et al.

Summary: The use of synthetic antibiotics and chemicals in aquaculture poses threats to sustainability due to the development of drug-resistant pathogens and residual antibiotic impacts. Herbal products and essential oils offer alternative approaches to combat microbial and parasitic diseases, with EOs showing effectiveness against fish parasites and pathogenic bacteria through mechanisms that need further research. This review explores the potential of EOs as an environmentally friendly phytotherapeutic in aquaculture, highlighting gaps in current research and suggesting future approaches for sustainable practice.
