Summary: Concentrated sulfuric acid hydrolysis is the most effective method for recovering monomeric sugars from woody biomass, but sulfuric acid lignin is difficult to utilize. By adding t-butyl alcohol, high yields of sugars and lignin were achieved, improving the economic efficiency of the process.
