Correlation of banana productivity levels and soil morphological properties using regularized optimal scaling regression

Barlin O. Olivares et al.

Summary: This study developed a regression model between soil morphological variables and a crop Productivity Index (PI) for banana plantations in Venezuela, showing the clear relationship between soil quality and productivity. The selected model included biological activity, texture, dry consistence, reaction to HCl, and structure type variables, explaining the PI with an R-2 of 0.599. The methodology used in this study could be expanded to other banana-producing areas to enhance environmental sustainability and profitability.

Performance of rice (Oryza sativa (L.)) under AWD irrigation practice-A brief review

Kishor Mote et al.

Summary: Alternate wetting and drying (AWD) is an irrigation technique that aims to reduce water usage by intermittently flooding and drying fields, while maintaining crop yields. Safe AWD is a specific form of AWD that monitors the depth of perched water to ensure adequate water supply for plants without causing stress.

Coupling effects of irrigation amount and nitrogen fertilizer type on grain yield, water productivity and nitrogen use efficiency of drip-irrigated maize

Jinjin Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different irrigation levels and nitrogen fertilizer types on maize production. The results showed that increasing irrigation levels and using specific types of nitrogen fertilizer can significantly improve maize yield and nitrogen use efficiency.

Paddy soils have a much higher microbial biomass content than upland soils: A review of the origin, mechanisms, and drivers

Liang Wei et al.

Summary: Research shows that microbial biomass content in paddy soils is higher than in upland soils due to factors such as higher root C input by rice plants, lower oxygen availability, higher microbial C assimilation efficiency, and additional C stabilization on iron (oxyhydr)oxides in paddy soils. Despite higher temperatures and better water availability, microbial turnover is slower in paddy soils due to oxygen limitation, leading to nearly double the microbial biomass content compared to upland soils.

Irrigation and fertilization management to optimize rice yield, water productivity and nitrogen recovery efficiency

Xiao-chuang Cao et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant effects of water regimes and nitrogen application rates on rice yield, water productivity, and nitrogen recovery efficiency. The optimal comprehensive benefits were achieved at water quantity and nitrogen application rate of 11,000 m3 ha(-1) and 160 kg N ha(-1) respectively. The optimization model can save water input and nitrogen application rate by approximately 17.0% and 11.1% respectively, compared to the traditional strategy. Further validation and adaptation research is needed for larger-scale field application.

Soil organic carbon, physical fractions of the macro-organic matter, and soil stability relationship in lacustrine soils under banana crop

Tatiana Rondon et al.

Summary: The study in Venezuela analyzed lacustrine soils under banana cultivation and found that high yields are associated with high organic carbon content in stable soils, emphasizing the importance of using less recalcitrant organic fertilizers for sustainable management of banana cultivation.
